The Gonzaga basketball team has had a lot of talented players over the years. Some have made it to the NBA and some have had successful careers in other places around the world. Gonzaga currently has 5 players in the NBA and 12 players playing professionally elsewhere. In this article I will look at which former Zags are still playing.

NBA players

Five Gonzaga players are currently playing in the NBA.

Ronny Turiaf

Turiaf was drafted by the Lakers in the 2005 draft. After having heart surgery and missing his rookie season, Turiaf has had a solid career as a back up in the NBA. He has played for seven NBA teams, the Lakers, Warriors, Knicks, Heat, Wizards, Clippers and Timberwolves. Turiaf has won a NBA championship with the Miami Heat. He signed this offseason with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Austin Daye

Daye was drafted 15th overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 2009 NBA draft. Daye averaged a career high of 7.5 points in his second season with the Pistons, but, fell out of the rotation with the team in the coming years. He was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies mid season and signed a new deal with the Toronto Raptors in August.

Robert Sacre

Sacre was the last pick of the 2012 NBA draft. He has gone back and forth between the Lakers and D-League. He is a popular bench player for the Lakers and signed a three-year contract in July with Los Angeles.

Elias Harris

After going undrafted in this year’s NBA draft, Elias Harris signed on with the Lakers’ summer league team. He played very well in the summer league and earned himself an NBA contract. He will be in a battle for minutes this season and may split time between the D-League and the NBA.

Kelly Olynyk

Olynyk was drafted 13th overall in the 2013 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics. The 22-year-old should be a main component to the rebuilding Celtics. He will see time at both the center and power forward positions. He signed his rookie deal in July.

International players

Twelve former Zags are still playing internationally.

Jeremy Pargo

Pargo has been all over the place since he finished his career at Gonzaga in 2009. Pargo played limited minutes with the Memphis Grizzles in 2011-2012 then split time between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers in 2012-2013.  His current team is CSKA Moscow in Russia.

Micah Downs

Downs like Pargo went undrafted in the 2009 NBA draft. He has played several years in Europe playing for teams Zadar (Croatia), Leuven Bears (Belgium), Ford Burgos in (Burgos) and Bàsquet Manresa in (Spain). Last season he played in Maine with the Red Claws of the D-League. Downs has been on several NBA summer league teams but has yet to get on a roster. I was born and raised in spokane. I’ve been a zags nut forever. Tons of love to former players like Josh, My boy Ira, Matty B, Big Will and Mr downs. I’m glad you guys have found success somewhere. I don’t care for pargo tho. He’s smug and thinks he’s better then everyone. GO ZAGS!
