Minnesota Vikings: Problems after the bye

The Minnesota Vikings haven’t necessarily played their best football since the beginning of this season. Off to a 1-3 start, the team is hoping to reproduce their first win of the season next week against the Carolina Panthers. The team has many issues to work out before they can get the 2013 season back on the right path.

It all starts at quarterback. There are two differing opinions out there on the situation: those who think Matt Cassel should be the starter next week and those who believe Christian Ponder should take the starting position over again(Leslie Frazier).

I think I made my opinion very clear in saying that I believe Ponder’s time at quarterback should be over, but I don’t make the decisions for the team. That’s unfortunate because the coaching staff is behind Ponder. I understand their allegiance to the guy, but the difference Cassel made in the flow of the offense was nothing short of a miracle after the way Ponder began the season.

I don’t think it’s wrong to bench Ponder even if he is completely healthy. Don’t get me wrong; I like the guy and hope for his success, but there comes a point when enough is enough. Hopefully, the coaching staff doesn’t learn the hard way by starting Ponder and losing another game. Luckily the Panthers have had their fair share of issues so far this season. For Vikings fans it will be a waiting game.

The secondary is my other cause for concern. Not only have there been injuries keeping the best rotation off the field, but the guys who are on the field aren’t getting it done.

They have given up big plays in key moments of the game, giving up game-winning drives to the Bears and Browns; not to mention their near collapse against the Steelers. There comes a time when the secondary has to step up and make plays.

I realize the rest of the defense has missed a ridiculous amount of tackles but the secondary needs to pick up the slack to help the rest of the defense. It’s up to the secondary to stop teams on third down instead of letting the opposing offense move the chains. The defense as a whole looks good at many moments, however for every great play they make there are three bad ones soon to follow.

Will the Vikings keep it together and win another one at “home?” That is for you to decide.

I think Josh Freeman is a perfect fit. He brings mobility good a great decision maker and a add weapon to the Vikings offense. He will take some of the pressure off of Peterson. Ponders’ run is over if you wont’ to go to the playoffs!!!!!

Isn’t it always about who gives you the best chance to win? I think Freeman will be starting in a couple of weeks.

Our points are there….but on the other side of the coin, the other team gets more….not that Ponder has been a stellar quarterback….but common sense says the other teams points are not the fault of the quarterback…unless he dressed on both sides…oh,but they are if you’re Romo and Ely, and I don’t see those getting crucified…now Schaub, might be…
