Breaking news from Twitter: the Buffalo Bills will be starting Thad Lewis this Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, per Adam Schefter.
With starter E.J. Manuel going down with a minor knee injury Thursday night in a loss to the Browns, Buffalo came into this week with a huge question mark at quarterback. Undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel played the majority of the 2nd half Thursday after Manuel went down, and pretty much sucked massively. Tuel managed to go 8-20 for 80 yards, and also managed to throw a pick six that iced the game for the Bills. Because of his awful performance, Tuel is being benched in favor of Thad Lewis.
Who is Thad Lewis you ask? Let me save you all a trip to Google.
Thaddeus Lewis is an undrafted free agent from Duke University. Lewis threw for 10,065 yards, 67 touchdowns and just 40 picks in his 4 years at Duke. Lewis was a finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award in his senior season, which is given to the best college football quarterback. He finished his NCAA career with an abysmal 10-38 record.
Not surprisingly, Lewis went undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft. Lewis then signed with the Rams and was immediately placed on the practice squad.
After being released by the Rams, the Cleveland Browns claimed him off the waiver wire in September of 2012. Lewis apparently didn’t impress the Browns, being released in October of 2012. So far, Lewis has been on an NFL team for a grand total of 2 months. Not looking good for Thaddeus.
Luckily for Mr. Lewis, Cleveland gave him another shot in December of 2012, when he was signed to the Cleveland Browns yet again as the 3rd string quarterback behind Brandon Weeden and Colt McCoy. It’s never a good sign if you’re thought of as being worse than Brandon Weeden and Colt McCoy. When Weeden and McCoy went down with injuries in December, Lewis finally got the starting nod. On December 30th, 2012, Lewis made his first and only career start against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Lewis wasn’t awful, throwing for 204 yards with one touchdown and one interception against one of the best defenses in the league (remember this was 2012…not the case this year…sorry Steelers fans).
Unfortunately for our hero, Weeden came back from injury and Lewis was forced to fade into the background once again.
The Buffalo Bills managed to pick up Mr. Lewis in a trade this preseason with the Detroit Lions. The Bills gave away linebacker Chris White for Thaddeus after Kevin Kolb and E.J. Manuel got hurt at the end of the preseason.
So now we arrive at today, October 7th, 2013, where it is announced that our hero Thaddeus will get a chance to start his 2nd NFL game. A player who has bounced around various practice squads and backed up the likes of Brandon Weeden and Colt McCoy will get another shot at NFL glory.
So as Bills fans, let’s all get on our knees and look to the football gods once more and ask, “Haven’t we suffered enough?”
