Quite a nice evening in the National Basketball Association, as there were seven games altogether, with one going into overtime… and it’s still just the pre-season. Of those seven a quartet of them have former UNC Basketball players in them, and a pair of them were head to head match ups with both franchises having former Heels on it. And as usual, if there were for North Carolina players on the hardwoods the prior night, the next day there is going to be a write up here on ISPORTSWEB… called “Heels in the Pro’s: NBA Style”. So, let’s get going with the recap for 10/08/13…
The first game of the night is the one between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was played in front of 9,022 fans at the Quicken Loans Arena and was televised by Fox Sports Ohio. For the guest squad it’s John Henson, who comes off the bench and plays a total of 18 minutes in all. In that stint the power forward scored six points (3 for 6 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 0 for 0) to go with four rebounds, two assists and two blocks while having a -9 pts differential. On the other side it should have been Tyler Zeller seeing action, but the seven footer did not play in this one due to a problem with his hip. From what I have read the center had an MRI for it. As far as the game was concerned, it was Cleveland taking this one by a dozen, with the final score being 99 to 87. The win puts the Cavs at 1 and 0 on the season, with their next game being in the sunshine state versus the Magic on 10/11. The loss slides the Bucks to 0 and 1, and the franchise will try to right the ship on 10/10 as they head to play the Timberwolves.
The next game of the night is the one between Atlanta Hawks and the Charlotte Bobcats, played at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C. The fans in attendance were 4,457 and the game was televised by TSOH. For the home squad it’s center Brendan Haywood. Unfortunately the 13th year pro did not get to play in this one as he is dealing with a sprained left foot. In the end, in a very tight game, it was Atlanta winning by a duece, defeating Charlotte by the final of 87 to 85. With the loss the Bobcats are 0 and 1 on the pre-season and will be next on the court on 10/11 when they head to Miami to take on the defending NBA Champs.
As we move on to the third game of the night, it should have been another game where we see former UNC Basketball players lacing it up on both sides. However, in the game between the Golden State Warriors and the Utah Jazz, played at the EnergySolutions Arena in front of 19,025 and televised FxRM, neither played. For the guest squad second year pro Harrison Barnes is dealing with a nagging left foot injury he has had for a while. On the other side, for the Jazz, it should have been Marvin Williams, in his ninth year in the Association, taking to the hardwoods. However the power forward is still rehabbing a right achilles. Even without the two former Heels the game had to be played, and it was the home squad taking this one quite easily, as Utah downed Golden State by 23 points, with the final score being 101 to 78. With the win the Jazz are 1 and 0 and will be back in action on 10/11 as they play the Trail Blazers. The loss puts the Warriors back below .500 at 1 and 2, and the franchise will play next the Lakers on 10/15.
And finally, in the last game of the night, it’s the Denver Nuggets heading to Tinsel Town to take on the Los Angeles Lakers. The game, played in Ontario, Canada at the Citizens Business Bank Arena with 6.023 in attendance was also televised by NBATV. For the mile high city it’s Ty Lawson, who starts at the point and get a total of 24 minutes in all. In that time frame the speedster scores seven points (2 for 5 ~ 0 for 1 ~ 3 for 4) to go with five assists, four rebounds, a steal and a turnover while having a pts differential of 0 for the night. In the end, in another close game, it was LA taking this one by a basket, outlasting Denver by the final of 90 to 88. With the loss the Nuggets are now at .500 with a record of 1 and 1. The franchise’s next game will be against the Spurs on 10/14.
