VCU Basketball: Rams Ranked #1 in A-10 preseason poll

VCU is ranked 1st in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll. Earlier this week the 2013 annual A-10 media day took place. VCU was picked by a league of head coaches and selected media members as the top team in the A-10. The Rams received 19 first place votes out of the 24 total votes offered. St. Louis received the remaining 5 first place votes ranking them in 2nd and La Salle earned the 3rd place ranking.

Ranking 1st is a big step for VCU. They were ranked 2nd in this poll last season but one aspect that can’t be ignored is how different the conference looked last year. Xavier, Butler, Charlotte and Temple have left the A-10 this season and George mason has entered into it. With such large changes the Rams will be out of their comfort zone with the different conference dynamics. Although this is only their second season in the conference, there will be some challenges along the way with these changes for sure.

In addition to the top ranking, VCU had three players honored with placements on conference teams. Senior Juvonte Reddic made first team all conference along with Junior Trevon Graham. Reddic has been a critical team member, playing all 36 games for VCU in their 2011-2012 season. He runs the floor with a smart, quick style. Many critics and fans have compared Reddic to former Ram, Larry Sanders, who went on to be a 15th overall NBA draft pick. Although a loss for VCU, Reddic may have many more successes in his basketball career and may follow in Sanders footsteps.

Trevon Graham, the second Ram to be selected for the A-10’s first team all conference, is a junior and excites fans as he may not have even reached his prime under Smart’s coaching yet. He is a powerful forward who may not be the tallest on the team, still standing at 6’6”, he uses his quick tempo to execute plays. Graham is a treacherous matchup on both sides of the court.

VCU got yet another honor with Junior Briante Weber making the preseason all-defensive team. Weber is full of energy and positivity as he is one of the most charismatic VCU team members. Without fail Weber plays well with his quick hands and follows through with steals, steals, steals.

This #1 ranking in the A-10 sets a great mood for the team as they grow closer to the start of the season. Fans can expect Coach Smart to let this excite the team but not let it change how passionate they play.
