The New York Giants are now (0-6) and it is time to start looking towards the offseason. The Giants have a huge decision to make with wide receiver Hakeem Nicks. This will be a difficult choices considering the Giants signed Victor Cruz to a long term deal this past offseason. Also second year player Ruben Randle has been putting up big numbers this season. Hakeem Nicks has had his share of issues with injuries in his career. With his contract expiring the Giants have to decide if they want to keep him or let him go, and either way Hakeem Nicks will most likely be asking for big money.
Hakeem Nicks performance so far this season has been great and he looks like the pro bowler wide receiver he use to be. So far this season he has 25 receptions for 442 yards, and looks to be on pace for over 1,000 receiving yards this season. When Nicks is healthy he is one of Eli Manning’s more dangerous targets. If Nicks wants the Giants to consider resigning him, he has to prove that he can stay healthy. Last year Hakeem Nicks struggled with his performance while battling through injuries. The toughest one was his foot injury, which he had surgery on in the offseason.
The Giants have lots of offseason things to consider along with Nicks’ free agency. They have lots of defensive problems and an offensive line that needs some upgrades. Those problems would most likely take priority over the Giants resigning Nicks. The other obstacle is Ruben Randle’s development as a wide receiver this year. Randle has the talent to be the number two receiver behind Victor Cruz. The only thing that can stop Randle from moving up would be his mental mistakes. Against Chicago he ran the wrong route and it lead to a pick six. No matter the mistakes Ruben Randle looks like a pro bowl talent and the Giants have to decide if next season is his time to be the number two receiver.
Hakeem Nicks is playing for a contract next year, and whether it is with the Giants or not he wants to be paid top receiver money. The Giants may decide to replace him with an inexpensive free agent or a talented draft pick in the middle rounds. Hakeem Nicks is definitely worth the investment for any team, and the Giants know that. Hopefully the Giants can resign him and have a trio of dangerous big threat receivers. Nicks will be one of the big name free agents in this upcoming offseason and it will be interesting to see what happens.
