Earlier this week, UNC basketball coach Roy Williams extended a scholarship offer to top center prospect Stephen Zimmerman.
After securing three of 2014’s top prospects and being widely regarded as having the top 2014 recruiting class, UNC has moved onto to trying to secure some of the top talents in the 2015 class.
Zimmerman is a 6-11, 215-pound center out of Bishop Gorman High School. He is currently ranked as the top center in the 2015 class and is the second ranked prospect overall.
Zimmerman is described as having very good size, and in the past year alone he has grown over two inches. Early scouting reports on the young center hail his quick footwork and excellent shot blocking ability. The only weakness in his game right now is an unwillingness to operate with his back to the basket.
Coach Williams offered Zimmerman last Thursday night, a day after he watched him work out at Bishop Gorman High.
The recruiting process for Zimmerman is expected to be intense; he has already received offers from Arizona, Auburn, Connecticut, UNLV, Indiana, Florida State, Kansas, Oregon, Oregon State, USC and UTEP.
There has been much speculation about Zimmerman’s high school teammate, Chase Jeter, who is receiving a lot of attention from UNC as well. Jeter is a 6-9 power forward, and it is thought that securing Jeter could go a long way for UNC’s chances to secure Zimmerman as well.
Currently, UNC has also offered 6-10 Diamond Stone. The Tar Heels will definitely be looking to land a big man prospect for the 2015 season even if it’s not Zimmerman or Stone. Look to see more post players get looks from UNC in the coming weeks.
