If you got a chance to watch former UNC Football stand out Giovani Bernard play anytime this season, you would be hard pressed to think that the young man is but a rookie in the National Football League. It seems that each week the second rounder for the Cincinnati Bengals contributes more and more to his team, including this week when he scored on a pretty amazing run after the catch play.
Here are Bernard’s totals for the first six weeks…
And while he has not come close to breaking the century mark in rushing, in part due to splitting time in the back field, the tail back just got his first 100 yds combined game against Buffalo this week, while having had 99 yds game against Green Bay in week three. Even more telling is that every week the rookie has gotten more carries, going from four in the first game ever as a pro to 15 this last one.
In all Bernard is now at 438 yards combined, 237 on the ground to 201 in the air, while having a pair of rushing touchdowns as well as a couple caught. While his only blemish so far on the season was the fourth quarter fumble against New England that could have been very costly, but in the end was not.
With the Bengals in first place in the AFC North and Bernard being a contributor to this, it is pretty safe to say that as the season progresses we will hear more and more about the 21 year old.
What I have to wonder as I follow the 5’9/208 lbs running back this season is this… being a second round pick means that every single team passed on Bernard in the last draft. Are any of those NFL franchises now second guessing themselves on not pulling the trigger on him?
That will be a question that many fans will argue on for a long time. On the other hand, I doubt that so called analysts, GMs, scouts and coaches would have thought that the 37th pick overall would be doing as well as he is, especially with someone like BenJarvus Green Ellis on the same squad. And that has to be making what Giovani Bernard is doing just that much more sweeter for him.
