Eli Manning dropped back and looked downfield. His offensive line was holding well and Manning saw Brandon Myers open. The ball floated in the air and seemed to stay in the air too long. It was as if AL from Angels in the Outfield held the ball in the air a second longer as it deflected of Myers’ fingers and into the hands of Tim Jennings.
The 2013 New York Giants (0-6), in this instance, adopted a popular phrase spoken in the 20th century about another New York team “Close, but no cigar.”
So close were they to their first win of the 2013 season. Yes, I said that right. Their first win of the season.
Amidst all the finger pointing and dubious rounds of blame game surrounding Manning, Tom Coughlin, the Giants offensive line, the water boy… one man apparently has dodged such assertions.
New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese took over the general manager position in 2007 and was credited for the 2007 NFL Draft selections by the New York Giants: Steve Smith, Ahmad Bradshaw, Kevin Boss and Aaron Ross were among these selections. These four players were significant in the Giants’ Super Bowl season following the draft.
In 2011, Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks were the prized possessions of Reese that were integral in the Giants’ Super Bowl along with Jason Pierre Paul and Linval Joseph. These four players came into the organization following the 2007 season and have provided much support to the Giants organization.
Yet, we’re almost midway through the 2013 season and this team that was constructed by Reese doesn’t look like the diamonds in the rough, but more like fools rubies. Reese erected a countdown clock in the locker room for the 2014 Super Bowl which is to be held at MetLife Stadium, but that clock might as well be a countdown to how long Reese may have a job.
The Giants haven’t started 0-6 since 1976, when the team went 0-9 before grinding a win out against the Washington Redskins. Better yet, the Giants haven’t been this bad for a while.
We can point the finger at the players and coaches for not coming up with the wins, but if you look at it, a couple plays shifted in favor of the Giants and the record would be different. But if we want to criticize an organization, you need to start from the top, not the bottom. Reese constructed this team confident that they were Super Bowl contenders.
But the 2013 New York Giants are looking like Super Bowl pretenders.
