The Heisman trophy is what every sportscaster talks about every Saturday. You constantly hear about players having ‘Heisman-worthy performances’. Despite his public controversy early in the season, Johnny Manziel has a huge chance at winning the award for the second straight year.
The talk began in Texas A&M’s third game of the season. The stage was set when No. 1 Alabama ventured to College Station to seek revenge. It was dubbed the game of the year, and it was just that. Johnny and the Aggies rallied against the defending two-time BCS national champion. Manziel’s performance in that game was outstanding.
He was up against the best team in the nation, and he put up huge numbers. I say he was up against Alabama because, let’s face it, Manziel is Texas A&M. He had 562 total yards and five touchdowns against the Tide.
His next all-star performance was against Ole Miss this weekend. Johnny Football carried the Aggies. He suffered a knee injury early in the game which put everyone on alert, but he came back after his injury and clinched the win for the Aggies on a bum knee.
Manziel triumphed in the comeback victory in Oxford. He completed 31 of 35 passes and had 470 total yards, as well as two rushing touchdowns. Manziel did have some mistakes though , throwing an interception in the end zone and fumbled in the fourth. However, the defending Heisman trophy winner did scramble for a conversion on 4th and 7 that led to the game tying score in the fourth.
Johnny Football has an unbelievable calculated unpredictability about him. He takes chances and makes outstanding plays that put points on the board. Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin said, “The thing that makes him different is he’s one of the greatest competitors I’ve been around. He takes some chances, yeah. He plays a little on the edge, but that’s what makes him him.”
This season alone Manziel has completed 131 of 179 passes for 1,835 yards and thrown 14 touchdowns. He has rushed 438 yards for 5 touchdowns. He is unstoppable. There are still big games ahead, and I believe that Manziel will continue to amaze sports fans everywhere.
There is a reason Manziel is called Johnny Football: he is one of the greatest players out there and has high hopes to become college football’s second two time Heisman trophy winner.
