The fact that Andrew Wiggins is on the cover of Sports Illustrated is no precursor to his upcoming season. People everywhere are now saying that he will have a bad season because of some Sports Illustrated curse.
There is proof that such a curse is nothing more than a myth. Lebron James was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and cursed is the last word to describe his life since. It is just another thing that Kansas critics are trying to say to prepare themselves from the inevitable success they will have to endure.
That being said, I do understand why some people think this is a huge distraction for someone. For normal young athletes, this could be a huge bloost to their ego, and make them believe they are above everyone else. With all the fame and media attention Wiggins is receiving already, it would be very easy for him to let it go to his head. It is already rumored that he will receive a $180 million shoe deal with Adidas following the end of his Kansas career, whenever that might be. For a young kid like Wiggins, it is extremely difficult to sustain his humility after all that.
Wiggins is not a normal 18-year-old kid. Anyone that has come into contact with him has spoken his praise in the highest regard. He is not a cocky, all-about-me kind of person. He is just a normal kid that spends most of his free time playing video games that happens to be blessed with an unbelievable ability. This kind of thing would ruin a lot of young players, but not this one.
Kansas Basketball head coach Bill Self says he might turn to Danny Manning to insure that the attention does not go to his head.
“Other than Danny, you’d have to go back to Wilt to find a guy that had this much fanfare coming in,” Self said according to an ESPN press release. “He’s just a kid. I told him the other night that he hasn’t even made a basket yet. The attention he’s received is based on potential. It’s not based on anything he’s done.”
It would really benefit Wiggins to have the counseling or guidance that Manning could provide. Regardless if he does or not, Wiggins is a high character guy and the “Sports Illustrated curse” will not effect him whatsoever.
