UNC Basketball: can the Tar Heels match their 2014 recruiting class?

Malik NewmanIn the past couple weeks, Roy Williams and his staff have been slowing down their recruiting efforts for 2014 prospects. Instead, they’ve focused their efforts on the 2015 class.

So far, UNC basketball has made offers to eight prospects, but we’ll take a look at the more high-profile ones here.

Malik Newman

Newman is an elite prospect who recently solidified his place as the number one prospect in the 2015 class. He is a 6-3 combo guard with excellent scoring ability and a great jump shot. He is currently fielding offers from Alabama, Arizona, Kentucky, Mississippi, UCLA, and UNC. Look to see recruiting of the top guard heat up in the near future.

Ivan Rabb

By the time 2015 rolls around, UNC will not have had a top center prospect in years. This makes the recruiting of Ivan Rabb all the more important. Right now, Rabb is ranked the number three prospect overall. Rabb has received offers from Arizona, California, Connecticut, UCLA, UNLV, Kansas, Kentucky, and UNC. Rabb hails from Oakland, California so the California-based teams may have an edge when it comes to recruiting the young center.

Luke Kennard

Kennard is an extremely fundamentally sound shooting guard out of Franklin Ohio. He is known for his three-point range and his capable handle. Early scouting reports have compared him to a shorter Kyle Singler. Unfortunately, Kennard has made three visits to Kentucky during the last two months alone. So the chances of landing the five-star prospect don’t seem too good for UNC right now.

Besides these three mentioned above, UNC has offered scholarships to a slew of other top prospects in the 2015 class. That’s not even to mention the prospects the Tar Heels could eventually offer in the coming months.
