Cincinnati Bengals (4-2) at Detroit Lions (4-2), 1PM, October 20, 2013
The Cincinnati Bengals and Detroit Lions are similar in so many areas. Great front fours, elite wide receivers, first round tight ends, and shifty running backs will be featured on Ford Field this Sunday. In what should be a highly-competitive nail-biter, this game likely comes down to clutch quarterback play.
Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton is coming off of a three-touchdown performance in a 27-24 win over the Bills. Dalton has eight touchdowns and six interceptions on the year.
Dalton has taken a lot of heat this year for not capitalizing enough drives with his plethora of weapons. He silenced his critics if only for a moment; however, his improvement could be attributed to an easy matchup. The Bills defense he faced is tied for 27th in yards per game allowed.
The Lions defense poses more of a threat as they are tied for second in the NFL with 11 interceptions thanks greatly to heavy pressure from its defensive line. Quarterbacks have only a 38.7 QBR against the Lions this season. That ranks fourth among defenses this year.
Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for four touchdowns himself last week on what was the fourth-ranked Browns defense. Stafford now has 12 touchdowns and four interceptions.
The Bengals secondary has gone 20 straight games without allowing a 300-yard passing game. That is the longest active streak in the NFL.
Usually this type of defense would be a death knell for the Lions’ heavy pass attack, but this year things have been different. Stafford has only thrown for over 300 yards in one game. The Lions no longer need their quarterback to throw fifty times to stay in games.
The Bengals got their first road win of the season last week, but the victory was not convincing. Dalton played his best game of the year, and they still only won by three points against a mediocre Bills team. The Lions are 2-0 at home and dominated each game.
Calvin Johnson looked a lot better in practice this week, and that is everything. I am already changing one of my picks from last week! I have that kind of power..
