Last night, which was the final night of the NBA pre-season, was a nine game schedule for the Association. Seven have former North Carolina basketball players, however one of those, Toronto Raptors vs Milwaukee Bucks was cancelled. But nonetheless, with plenty of former UNC hardwood players on the slate it is once again time for the “North Carolina in the NBA” recap for 10/25/13…
To be noted: While Kendall Marshall’s former and present team were not in action last night, I wanted to make sure all of you saw that the former UNC point guard was traded from the Suns to the Wizards, and is likely going to be cut before the beginning of the regular season.
First game of the night is the first game at home for the New York Knicks, who have been on the road since their home field was being redone, hosting the Charlotte Bobcats. The game was played at Madison Square Garden in front of an attendance of 19,812 and was televised by MSG. For the visiting squad it should have been big man Brendan Haywood, but as we all know by now the seven footer is sidelined for three months as he recovers from a surgery to fix a stress fracture. On the other side, for the team from the Big Apple, it’s point guard Raymond Felton, who starts and plays a total of 24 minutes. In that stint the veteran guard scored a deuce (1 for 7 ~ 0 for 2 ~ 0 for 0) to go with six rebounds, five assists, a block and a pair of turnovers while having a pts differential of -2. In a low scoring affar, it was Charlotte beating New York by a bucket, with the final score being 85 to 83. With the win the Bobcats finish the pre-season at 5 and 3 (3-1 on the road). The loss gives the Knicks a final record of 2 and 5 (0-1 at home).

The next game on the slate has the Denver Nuggets heading to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Bulls. The game was broadcasted by CSNC and played at the United Center in front of a crowd that numbered 21,773. For the visiting team it’s speedster Ty Lawson, who starts and plays 16 minutes in all. In that time the floor general scores 11 points (5 for 7 ~ 0 for 1 ~ 1 for 2) to along with three rebounds, a pair of assists, a steal, a block and a turnover while having a +4 pts differential. In the end it was the home squad taking this one, as Chicago beat Denver by five points, with the final score being 94 to 89. The loss puts the Nuggets at 2 and 5 for the pre-season (1-4).
Third in the line up is the match up between Houston Rockets and the Memphis Grizzlies. The game was watched by xx fans at the FedEXForum and the game was televised on CSN Houston. For the home squad it’s power forward Ed Davis, who comes off the bench for a total of twelve minutes. In that time the forward scored three points (1 for 2 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 1 for 3) to go with five boards, three assists, a block and a turnover while having a pts differential of -6. As far as the game was concerned, it was all Houston in this one, defeating Memphis by 19 points, with the final tally being 92 to 73. With the loss the Grizzlies end the pre-season with a .500 record oveall at 4 and 4, winning a pair of games at home and a pair on the road.
As we keep moving through the games it’s the Dallas Mavericks hosting the Indiana Pacers. The game was played at the American Airlines Center in front of a crowd that numbered 19,107. For the home squad it’s first veteran Vince Carter, who comes off the pine for a total of 21 minutes in all. In that time the shooting guard scores eight points (3 for 6 ~ 2 for 3 ~ 0 for 0) to go with a rebound, an assist, a steal and a pair of turnovers while having a -14 pts differential. Also playing is shooting guard Wayne Ellington, who gets 19 minutes coming off the bench. In that stint the guard scores five points (2 for 8 ~ 1 for 5 ~ 0 for 0) to go along with three boards, two assists, a steal and 3 TOs as well as having a pts differential of -12. Also on the home team there would be Brandan Wright, but the center is recovering from a fractured left shoulder, and both the former North Carolina player and his franchise are unsure if he will be ready for the season opener on 10/30. In the meantime, as far as this game went, it was all the visiting team, as Indiana defeated Dallas by 21 points, with the final score being 98 to 77. The loss puts the Mavs at .500 for the pre-season, at 4 and 4 (1-3 at home).

In the second to last game we have the Utah Jazz heading to Tinsel Town to take on the Los Angeles Lakers. It is a game that is player at the Honda Center (Anaheim, CA) in front of a crowd of 14,808 and was televised by TWC SN. For the visiting team it should be power forward Marvin Williams, but the young man is still recouping from the achilles and from the sound of this article he is going to take his time coming back from the injury. In a high scoring affair, it was Los Angeles winning this one, as they beat Utah by five, with the final being 111 to 106. With the loss the Jazz finish up the pre-season with just one win, 1 and 7 (0-5 on the road).
And we conclude this recap with the game between the Los Angeles Clippers hosting the Sacramento Kings. The game was televised by NBATV and was played at the STAPLES Center in front of an attendance of 15,802. For the home squad we have a pair of former North Carolina players, starting with veteran Antawn Jamison, who plays just five minutes in all. In that time the power forward scores three points (0 for 0 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 3 for 4) to go with nothing else while having a -14 pts differential. The other former Tar Heels is rookie Reggie Bullock, who comes off the bench for a total of 23 minutes. In that stint the shooting guard scores three points (1 for 4 ~ 1 for 3 ~ 0 for 0) to go along with four boards, an assist and a turnover while having a pts differential of -17. In the end, in this one, it was Sacramento winning this one, beating Los Angeles by 100, with the final score being 110 to 100. With the loss the Clippers end the pre-season at 5 and 3 (2-2 at home).
