The New York Jets (4-4) were embarrassed on Sunday by the Cincinnati Bengals(6-2), letting up 402 yards in their 49-9 loss.
Sunday couldn’t have gotten any worse for the New York Jets. In a blink of an eye the Bengals were up 14-0 in the first quarter. At the end of the second half, the Jets defensive backs had been scorched by Bengals wide receiver Marvin Jones for three touchdowns.
Yes, I said Marvin Jones, not A.J. Green. Jones made the Jets’ secondary look silly on Sunday, catching eight passed for 122 yards and FOUR touchdowns. Jones beat rookie corner back Dee Milliner three times in the first half for his three touchdowns. Milliner was benched in the first half and his struggles continue to prove he’s not ready to play in this league yet.
The Jets’ defense, that has been one of the better defenses in the league, was no match for Andy Dalton. Dalton threw for 325 yards and five touchdowns.
The Jets didn’t get much pressure on Dalton, only sacking him once all day. As a result, Dalton exposed the Jets’ defensive backs, wh0 now seem to be more of a weak link than we might have thought. Dalton has thrown for more than 300 yards three times in the Bengals’ four-game winning streak.
Geno Smith and the Jets’ offense wasn’t much more impressive than the defense. Smith threw two interceptions in the second half, both of which were brought back for touchdowns. Smith has now thrown a pick six in the last two games.
The Jets totaled only 240 yards of offense and allowed another three sacks. The Jets fell behind too early in the game to execute their game plan and only ran for 93 yards.
Its been the same story for the New York Jets this season. They are impressive one week, and come out with a gutsy victory. They then follow that by playing flat and unenthusiastic football the week after. The Jets have yet to win back-to-back games this year and have been consistently inconsistent.
The Jets’ defense better regroup quickly because Drew Brees and the high powered Saints offense comes to MetLife this weekend.
