Asmir Begovic is lethal is his own box
Scoring after just 13 seconds is impressive. Scoring as a goalkeeper is extremely rare. Scoring as a goalkeeper, after 13 seconds, from your own box was unheard of, until this weekend. Asmir Begovic’s driven long pass was taken by the wind and carried over the head of Southampton’s keeper Artur Boruc.
It’s the second quickest goal in the Premier League’s history. It makes him the fifth member of an elite group of goal scoring Premier League keepers including Peter Schmeichel, Tim Howard, Brad Friedel and Paul Robinson.
As well as that it makes Begovic Stoke’s joint top goal scorer, it means he has more league goals this season than Jermain Defoe and the same as £50m man and World Cup winner Fernando Torres.
What a difference a week makes
Last Sunday Sunderland were flying high after winning the North-East derby 2-1. It was back to earth with a bump this week as Sunderland slumped to their 7th defeat of the season away at Hull City.
The game fell apart for the Black Cats in the first half when Carlos Cuellar scored an own goal and both Andrea Dossena and Lee Cattermole were sent off. That red card is Lee “Clattermole” Cattermole’s seventh in the league meaning only Patrick Vieira, Richard Dunne and Duncan Ferguson have received more in the history of the Premier League.
Meanwhile last week’s derby losers Newcastle beat title contenders Chelsea 2-0 in the Saturday’s early kick off at St. James’ Park. The result extends Jose Mourinho’s poor run of form travelling to the North-East, he hasn’t won a game in the region since Chelsea beat Sunderland 2-1 in 2006.
Hart broken, Pantilimon on and City hitting seven
It was all a bit easy for Manchester City this weekend. Manuel Pellegrini bit the bullet regarding Joe Hart’s poor run of form and after Costel Pantilimon’s impressive midweek performance in the Capital One Cup it was the Romanian who started in goal.
An own goal from Bradley Johnson started the scoring and goals from David Silva, Matija Nastasic and Alvaro Negredo made it 4-0 before half time. Yaya Toure added a free kick on the hour mark, Sergio Aguero and Aden Dzeko also added their names to the score sheet making the final score 7-0. City were impressive, Norwich were lucky to get 0.
Martin Jol is the leagues under pressure man
There’s no shame in losing to Manchester United but for many Fulham fans it was the manor of the defeat, combined with their form already this season, which has disgruntled some of the Craven Cottage faithful.
It could have been much worse for Jol’s side who were 3-0 down after just 22 minutes. Fulham regained their composure and managed to pull one back but the result leaves them 15th in the league, just two points from the relegation zone. Things won’t be getting any easier for Jol either, next week sees a trip to Anfield.
Chuck Norris wears Hugo Lloris pajamas
Romelu Lukaku is not a small man. He’s a six foot three, 220 pound juggernaut and going into a 50/50 challenge with him is no laughing matter. So when the Belgian forward competed for the ball with Spurs’ Hugo Lloris and the French keeper took a knee it was no surprise when he appeared it had knocked him unconscious.
Veteran keeper Brad Friedel stripped off his tracksuit and was ready to be substituted on as a dazed and confused Lloris got to his feet and stumbled around the box held up by medical staff.
Although, in scenes similar to a poorly made kids film, against the advice of team mates, opposition players and the referee, Lloris continued and completed game even making important saves to keep the score at 0-0.
