EAST LANSING — After recording a season-high nine tackles (tied) — including a season-high three tackles for losses — and two sacks in Michigan State’s 29-6 trouncing of rival Michigan on Saturday, MSU fifth-year senior linebacker Denicos Allen was named the Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week earlier this morning.
Allen’s play helped the Spartans’ top-ranked defense (8-1, 5-0) hold the Wolverines’ (6-2, 2-2) offense to zero touchdowns, 168 total yards and -48 rushing yards.
Allen is the second MSU player this season to earn Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week honors, joining defensive end Shilique Calhoun — who earned the honor after scoring on a fumble return and an interception return in the Spartans’ 21-6 victory over South Florida on Sept. 7.
Allen is the third Spartan overall to earn the honor since 2004, and has moved into fourth place on MSU’s all-time list with 40.5 career tackles for loss after the victory.
Recipients of the award are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
