Kevon Looney, who was expected to become a Duke Blue Devil, did not opt to come to Duke, instead choosing to become a UCLA Bruin.
The Blue Devils were the favorite for Looney to pick, but instead he made a pick that no one thought was going to happen. This is an upset for most of the favorite schools to get Looney, but what does this mean for the Blue Devils?
Duke could still be fine without landing Looney; he would have filled a much needed role for the team next year as a post player. They are down to three post players left considering going to Duke, and they are Reid Travis, who is announcing his decision soon, Myles Turner, and Jahlil Okafor. It is important that they get at least two of the three post players left on their list for next season.
They have a total of five players left, and three of them could be a package deal. The trio comprised of Okafor, Tyus Jones, and Justise Winslow is getting to be more important by the day. This recruiting class for Duke was said to have the potential to be one of the best they have ever had, but with Looney, who was suppose to be going to Duke, choosing to go elsewhere might hurt. They are hoping they can get the three players who just visited Duke, and if they can make sure they can get all three of them could turn this class around.
Duke will know soon how well their class will be. It will be important to try to maximize this opportunity with Jones, Okafor, and Winslow. They are the only school that can land all three, but there is an opportunity that they won’t play together. Duke fans can only hope that Looney chose to go to UCLA because he knows something about some of the recruits heading to Duke.
The recruiting class will depend on the big three that the Blue Devils are trying to get to commit. It shouldn’t be a long wait to find out what they are going to do. It is really important that they can get at least three of their final five recruits. They can rebound from this but they should start getting commitments from their recruits soon.
This should be a good pick up for UCLA, and should be a great player at the college level. He is someone who can do anything on the court, and fills up the stat sheet. The Blue Devils will be fine after losing a great player like Looney, and it should open up an opportunity to get a player like Travis or Turner. If the Blue Devils get four out of the final five recruits they will have the best recruiting class of 2014. Even though the Blue Devils didn’t get Looney they should be all right for next year’s incoming freshmen.
