This Sunday the Seattle Seahawks (7-1) are looking for revenge against the team that ended their postseason in heart breaking fashion, the Atlanta Falcons (2-6). This game will air on FOX at 1 PM ET at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
Sad to say, there’s a good change the Seahawks can get that revenge. I love the optimism that veterans TE Tony Gonzalez, DE Osi Umenyiora, and QB Matt Ryan have, but when I see the conditions that these guys are playing in, it flat out sucks.
The team has faced so many injuries this season and haven’t bounced back even halfway from that and then the coaches are making bad decisions and not fixing critical issues like pass rush and the offensive line creating holes for the running backs.
Yes, Matt Ryan did screw some things up last week with three interceptions, but only because he was throwing the ball and trying to make plays happen. He didn’t have time to really think before he did and every drive all he could do was throw the ball or take a sack.
That is all the Falcons could do Sunday: rely on Matt Ryan. No real threats down the field, no one protecting the ring leader. What quarterback could possibly be successful in those predicaments? But I digress. And on a side note, thank God for Roddy White’s return. He can help take some of the pressure off of Ryan.
Also for lord sakes, will the football gods shed some light on this defensive line? There is absolutely no pressure on any quarterback. It truly irked me how they let Cam Newton look like a top notch quarterback. Newton had all the time in the pocket that he could have ever wished for. But that’s another story.
The coaches really need to do something about the running game. The offensive line won’t create any holes for anybody. This problem has been going on way too long and has only gotten worse. And this was spotted in the first preseason game when RB Steven Jackson couldn’t run to the outside after RT Mike Johnson was ruled out for the season.
So here’s the overall preview; Mike Smith needs to fix these problems where they will be noticeable: on Sunday. Seattle’s defense will come for Ryan, the run game will have to create at least 100 yards and sadly that’s a far stretch. Also, the offensive line isn’t improving enough. Ryan doesn’t feel comfortable in the pocket because he only has a matter of time before he’s going to be chased. He’s either going to throw the ball or take sack.
The defensive line needs to put pressure on Russell Wilson, and keep him in the pocket. He’s too short to see over his line, but don’t allow him to roll out. If he does and this becomes a game of chase, with the horrendous tackling, It’ll be a long night for the Falcons.
Don’t want to sound negative, but it’s the truth. These coaches need to fix these problems and like I’ve said before they’ve only gotten worse and now the Falcons have to play the #1 team in the NFC.
