When a team starts 0-6 on the season, you rarely expect them to be in the playoff hunt by week 11, but here the New York Giants (3-6) are just a game and a half behind the Dallas Cowboys (5-5) and Philadelphia Eagles (5-5) for first place in the NFC East division. The NFC East has not been one of the stronger divisions in the league so far this year, and that has allowed the New York Giants to remain in the race for first place.
Which ever team in the NFC East wins the division will probably finish with a 9-7 record at best. The Cowboys have had the chance to put distance between themselves and the other teams within the division. Dallas dropped close games to Kansas City and Detroit this season; both games were one point losses. If Dallas wins those two games, then the Giants would have been eliminated from playoff contention.
We still find ourselves trying to believe that the New York Giants have a shot at the playoffs, but here we are, and the Giants are one and a half games out of first place. The Giants are also going into a game against the Green Bay Packers, who do not have Aaron Rodgers available. The Giants have been given a gift, and a great opportunity to close the gap to a game out of first. The week Dallas is on there bye week, and Philadelphia plays the Washington Redskins (3-6).
If the Giants win and the Eagles lose this week, then every team will be one game behind Dallas. This would put a lot of pressure on the Cowboys to beat the Giants in week 12. Now if the Eagles win then they would move into first place with a (6-5) record, and the Giants would have to climb another hurdle, but if the Eagles lose it puts both the Giants and Redskins back in the race.
The race for the NFC East is heating up as the season continues, and these next two weeks will make things interesting within the division. This means that every division game from here until the end of the season will become even more important. The Giants finish the season against the Washington Redskins, and the Dallas Cowboys finish the season against the Philadelphia Eagles. Depending on how things develop in the next few weeks, one, or both of these games will probably decide the division winner.
The Giants are still alive in this division, after one of their worst starts in franchise history. This is the proof of how bad the NFC East has been this season, but it also keeps things interesting. How many Giants fans would have thought this was possible? Hopefully the Giants can keep the wining streak going, and they can put themselves in a position to win the division.
