The Oakland Raiders (4-6) battled the Houston Texans (2-8) this afternoon at Reliant Stadium, beating them 28-23. A major contributing factor for this win was rookie Matt McGloin, who took the place of injured quarterback Terrelle Pryor.
Today’s game against the Texans was Matt McGloin’s first NFL start. The currently undrafted free agent threw three touchdown passes to assist in the Raiders’ victory. McGloin took a knee three times in the fourth quarter to kill the clock and clinch the win. Rashad Jennings, taking the place of injured Darren McFadden, also dazzled fans when he plowed down Houston’s DJ Swearinger for an 80-yard touchdown.
Matt McGloin’s performance against Houston left an impression on Raiders’ fans, leaving them asking, who will continue as Oakland’s quarterback once Terrelle Pryor is healthy? After much ado about Pryor’s knee and his diminishing performances as quarterback, Matt McGloin seems like the perfect contender.

When asked about the possible replacement of Terrelle Pryor, Coach Dennis Allen evaded the question and said he would simply like to enjoy the Raiders’ win and evaluate future decisions later. Personally, I like this about Allen. He takes the time to relish Oakland’s performance before making any predetermined decisions.
Will McGloin replace Pryor in next week’s game against the Tennessee Titans, who are also 4-6 for the season?
My opinion is leaning towards no. Although many fans are disgruntled with Pryor’s recent performances, Coach Allen often creates excuses for the young quarterback. After the last two miserable defeats to the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants, Allen was not accusatory towards Pryor and instead blamed part of the issue on the quarterback’s injured knee.
Further evaluation of Matt McGloin and Terrelle Pryor’s presentations will continue throughout the week. If Pryor is up for par in time for next week’s game, I think we will see him back on the field. Perhaps we will see McGloin as the Raiders’ quarterback next season or possibly playing for a different team altogether. Either way, I think he will continue to defy expectations and leave fans more than content.
