Another one-loss week pushes my record to 70-14 for the season and 20-5 over the last five weeks. The easy part is over folks…with only two weeks left and all twelve teams in action for both weeks…then the Big Ten Title game…then bowl games. I had a couple of pretty good picks this week…I said MSU would beat Nebraska 29-27 and they did but by a 41-28 score…so off just 13 points there, but the best pick I had was the Penn State-Purdue game…I said Nittany Lions 42-14 and they won 45-21…just ten points off. The worst pick was Northwestern beating Michigan..funny, funny game that was.
Penn State-45 Purdue-21….CORRECT….There were some milestones established on Saturday…unfortunately, none by the Boilermakers. Zach Zwinak scored three more TD’s to bring his season total to 12. WR Allen Robinson caught his 78th pass of the season in this game which broke the single-season PSU record (that Robinson set last year). He also has established the single-season yardage record for Penn State. He is a real talent and I think, by and large he is going unnoticed…especially from a national perspective. Bill O’Brian has accomplished quite a bit since taking the head coaching job. He started last season 0-2…that was the last time PSU had lost two straight games…he has led his team to a 7-1 record after a loss…plus this team finished 8-4 in 2012 and will not be under .500 in 2013 either…pretty big feat considering the sanctions. Congrats Bill.. Read the full game recap here: Penn State holds off Purdue
Wisconsin-51 Indiana-3….CORRECT….Didn’t I say that the Badgers would be in trouble if they didn’t get 400 yards rushing?…I did…well they totaled 554 yards on the ground vs the Hoosiers…get a load of these numbers…HB James White had 205 yards and a TD…HB Melvin Gordon had 146 yards and a TD run…another HB, Corey Clement gained 108 yards and two more TD’s and WR Jared Abbrederis gained 86 yards on three carries and two of those were TD’s. Wisconsin had 7 runs of 30 yards or more in this game…that is more than 73 FBS teams had on the season! This was the first time in almost two years that the Hoosiers were held without a TD. The Badgers 554 yards rushing in this game was 10 yards shy of breaking the all-time Wisconsin record for rushing yards in a game that they set last year vs Indiana…can’t wait till next year can you IU coach Kevin Wilson?
Ohio State-60 Illinois-35….CORRECT….If a team can somehow prevent the early onslaught of offense that the Buckeyes seemingly barrage opposing teams with, I think they may be able to be beaten…the defense certainly has weaknesses…but that could really just be sign of boredom…by the time the second quarter rolls around, they usually have a four TD cushion. With leads like that, defense’s tend to relax a bit. Carlos Hyde finished with a career high 246 yards and four TD’s…OSU QB Braxton Miller also had a huge day on the ground with 16 carries for 184 yards…he also threw two TD passes but was not terribly efficient as he was just 13 of 29 for 150. It sure will be interesting if the Hoosiers can jump on OSU early next week and see how the Buckeyes react. I’m sure however, that won’t happen and the Bucks will jump out to a 35-0 lead and rush for 450 yards by the end of the first half.
Michigan-27 Northwestern-19 3OT’s….MISS….I cannot begin to tell anyone out there how unbelievably upset I was when Brady Hoke decided not to attempt a near chip-shot FG attempt with his team down 9-6 with almost six minutes left in regulation of a game in which they were not moving the ball….I just didn’t understand it…granted his defense was playing ok, but what on earth made him think his offense could gain the two yards necessary to keep the drive alive?…I was completely boggled by the notion…but in typical Hoke fashion, when he makes a blunder like that, his team bails him out…Dan Ferrigno, UM Special Teams coach should not only get a huge raise this season and a big fat hug from his boss…but he may get some looks for national assistant coach of the year (if MSU’s Pat Narduzzi doesn’t already have that trophy locked up). The way Brendan Gibbons got on the field and the rest of the FG unit deserves some credit…I have never seen anything like it…I almost missed it because of frustration and turning my head…stunning. Michigan State-41 Nebraska-28….CORRECT….Turnovers will kill you…and Nebraska knows that. They had a chance to push the big annoying kid out of the drivers’ seat for the second straight year. What an opportunity…a big game like this…at home…it was all setting up nicely for the Corn. But when you have opportunities like this, or in any game you cannot turn the ball over…especially against a team like the Spartans. MSU scored 24 points off of five Nebraska turnovers to lock the game up. So here are the Spartans with two games left, have a two game lead in the Legends Division. They travel to Northwestern next week and close out the regular season at home vs a Minnesota team that is pretty dangerous…although they face the Badgers next week. That game all of a sudden is a must-win for the Gophers to have that season finale vs Michigan State mean anything. Read the full game recap here: Michigan State upends Nebraska
