“As long as I’m with the Raiders, I want to be here every day, in this facility … just taking in the blessing. I feel like I’m fortunate enough to be in here in this facility instead of anywhere else in the world,” said Marquette King, first-year punter for the Oakland Raiders. His enthusiasm for the team shows not only in his words but also in his action on the field.
Although Marquette King is now considered one of the most promising new punters in the NFL, King did not begin punting until his junior year of high school, and it’s been an ambitious climb ever since.
Throughout his high school and college careers, King received several awards including Most Valuable Player following his senior year. After an excellent training camp this year in Napa, Coach Dennis Allen named Marquette King the starting punter for the Oakland Raiders.
What are some techniques King uses to improve his punting skills? King says he tries to imitate the habits of his fellow team members, such as Sebastian Janikowski and Jon Condo, an excellent pursuit for the young punter if he plans to enhance his skills.
Why is Marquette King’s increasing talent so important? One thing I think is important for the Oakland Raiders is to stay motivated and faithful. King has a dry erase board in his kitchen where he writes his goals for the season, what he wants to average per punt, and other statistical goals for the team and for himself. This demonstrates a great deal of incentive and hope, two traits the Oakland Raiders are demonstrating more and more as the season progresses. A promising player such as Marquette King, with high expectations and the excitement of a first-year NFL player, will only increase the Raiders’ enthusiasm to constantly improve their skills.
What do fans think about the young punter? Can we expect to see even more great performances from Marquette King? Do you think he’ll stick with the Raiders, since he is obviously highly passionate about the team? Let us know!
