While Michigan didn’t play a perfect game last week, their performance in overtime against Northwestern was definitely something that they can build on against Iowa. Michigan still hasn’t played a great game on the road yet, but they will have a chance to in Iowa City. I feel this game will be one of those low scoring, hard fought contests that are synonymous with Big Ten football. At the end of the day, Michigan’s ceiling is higher than Iowa’s and I think this shows when the clock hits 0:00 in the fourth quarter. Michigan 20 Iowa 17

The Wolverines lead the all-time series vs the Hawkeyes 41-13-4. Iowa has won three of the last four meetings including the last two at Kinnick. There is one big difference between these two teams in 2013…Both teams are in the middle of the pack offensively in the Big Ten, they are both bowl eligible at this point and they are both coming off of big emotional wins…the difference is Iowa has a much better defense, specifically pass defense. Both are decent against the run as UM is 4th and Iowa 5th in the conference…but the Hawks pass defense is 3rd in the Big Ten while Michigan’s is 10th. I feel like I have asked this question before of the Michigan defense about six weeks ago…Can the Michigan defense stop a first-year starting QB on the road in a very tough place to escape with a W?…If Michigan can, it would mean a .500 record on the road in Big Ten play for coach Hoke including two straight. But I think this week will end up just like that game I asked this question about originally…Ferentz has trouble after bye weeks..he is 3-8 in games after bye weeks…but Michigan has scored one TD in regulation in the last month.….Hawkeyes win at home 21-13.

Michigan has had an underwhelming season and Iowa has had some success with a stingy defense. Michigan has the slight edge coming off of a much-needed win last week. Perhaps they needed a little celebration to help them get things going. It won’t be easy though, as Iowa has a good chance to come out on top. Michigan wins 17-10.

Iowa is not a good match up for the Wolverines. Their defense is well-suited to attack the weaknesses of Michigan’s offense. The Hawkeyes have a great group of linebackers and quality defensive backs. They could cause problems for the U-M offensive line which in turn, causes problems for Devin Gardner. Michigan’s defense has played pretty well this season, but if the offense and/or special teams puts them in too many short field situations, they are bound to wear out as they have done in other games, (see Spartans, Michigan State or Cornhuskers, Nebraska). I’d like to pick Michigan to win, but I think Iowa does just enough to pick up the victory. Iowa 24-21
