This season has not been a great one for Nicks: so far this season he has 42 reception for 627 yards and no touchdowns. This kind of season was not expected after having 114 receiving yards in the first week against Dallas. His performance this year has been inconsistent, but some of that might be due to the Giants overall woes and Eli Manning’s struggles during the season so far.
Nicks was once a superstar receiver and was the Giants’ number one receiver until Victor Cruz exploded onto the scene. Now Nicks is trying to prove he is still a talented receiver in the NFL, but with each passing week Nicks’ free agency situation gets a bit more unclear.
This past week he was inactive for the game against Dallas because he missed practice. According to Nicks he asked the team permission to have his abdominal strain checked, to make sure it was not herniated. This resulted in him missing practice, and sitting out the most important game of the season.
Nicks has not commented on what happened last Sunday, and is expected to play this Sunday against the Washington Redskins. It is highly unlikely that this situation will go any further, and Nicks is not a player to cause locker room problems. Also with his upcoming free agency, Nicks does not want to have a reputation for being a diva wide receiver. That would effect which teams offer him contracts, and how much money he is offered as well.
Right now it is unclear if the Giants will resign Nicks after this season, and if they do it will be for a reasonable amount of money that the team can afford. If Nicks is looking for top pay he will have to look elsewhere, but with the season he is having, who will pay him top dollar? If Nicks does not finish with over 1,000 receiving yards and some touchdowns, he is not going to get a long term deal for big money.
There is still some time left in the season, and Nicks can use the remainder of the season to improve his numbers. He has to show that he still has number one receiver talent in the NFL before the season expires. If he can do that, then there will be a number of teams that will pursue him in the offseason.
No matter what kind of contract Hakeem Nicks signs, the team that gets him will be signing a receiver with the potential to be a star again in the NFL. It will certainly be an interesting story to keep an eye on in the offseason.
