The New York Giants (4-7) will play the Washington Redskins (3-8) this Sunday night at MetLife Stadium. This week 13 matchup does not have major playoff implications, and it is likely to be just another rivalry game for both teams. The Giants are hanging on to playoff hopes by a thread, but it depends on what happens with the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys. It still is a must win for the Giants if they want to keep any playoff hopes alive.
Playoffs aside, this game should be interesting and hard fought by both teams. They may or may not be playing for the playoffs, but they will be playing for pride. There is no clear advantage for either team in this game; they both seem to be evenly matched.
The Washington Redskins do have one of the league’s best rushing attacks with Alfred Morris at running back. Morris is having a strong season this year with 970 rushing yards so far, putting him 3rd in the league among the rushing leaders. The Giants do a decent job against the run and are going to have to stop Morris if they want to win the game.
The defenses for both teams have not been consistent this year and as a result both teams are at the bottom of the division. Washington’s defense has not been as strong as it was last year and is struggling. The passing defense for the Redskins is ranked 26th and their running defense is ranked 14th in the league. The Giants have been improving on their running game and with Nicks back the passing game should get a boost. The quarterback matchup is probably going to be the most important matchup in this game.
Both Eli Manning and Robert Griffin III have been struggling this year, and the proof is in the numbers. This game will come down to can limit the mistakes, and lead their team to victory. Griffin III has had games where he looks like the old RGIII that took the NFL by storm, and he has had games where he looks like a player suffering a sophomore slump. With the Giants’ lack of a pass rush, he could have a breakout game, the Giants need to keep him in check; he is still one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL.
As for Eli, he has to minimize the turnovers if he wants his team to win. Turnovers have been his weakness all season long and he has to keep improving on them. Also he has to get both Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz to put up big numbers. They have been struggling and with Washington’s inability to stop the pass effectively they both can have big games.
When its all over, and the dust clears from this rivalry matchup the Giants will be the victors. The still have a slight chance to make the playoffs, and they know this is a must-win. The Giants have a slightly better defense, and you can expect Andre Brown to build on his performance after rushing for over 100 yards last week. If the Giants were not in a panic in any of the previous weeks, this week they must be. This is their last shot, if the lose, then all shots at the playoffs go away, Giants win this one 31-24.
