Game 20 analysis: Dallas Mavericks get nice road win to start road trip

The Dallas Mavericks started a four-game Western Conference road trip Dec. 4 with a 100-97 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.

Dirk Nowitzki scored a team-high 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting, while leading six players in double figures for Dallas. Nowitzki added seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a season-high four blocks.

Monta Ellis struggled from the field, but finished with his second double-double of the year with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Dallas moves to 3-6 on the road and 12-8 overall, seventh in the West.

The Mavericks defense has played the fourth quarter well their last two games, allowing the Pelicans to score 20 while the Bobcats scored just 15 the game before.

It was a back-and-forth first half as the Pelicans went into the break leading 53-52.

Jrue Holiday hit a 3-pointer with 2:30 left in the third to give the Pelicans their biggest lead of the game at 73-65 before the Mavericks went on a 18-4 run after Nowitzki’s free throw gave Dallas a 83-77 lead with 9:27 left to play.

Holiday led the way for New Orleans with 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting, 4-of-5 from deep and nine assists. Al-Farouq Aminu grabbed his 13th career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 21 rebounds.

Nowitzki, who scored 14 of his 25 in the fourth versus the Bobcats, scored 11 in the final quarter against the Pelicans.

New Orleans were playing without its star forward Anthony Davis, who is set to miss four to six weeks, but still managed to outrebound Dallas 58-38 behind Aminu and Ryan Anderson’s 13.

The Mavericks continue their road trip with three on the west coast, starting with the West’s No. 1 team, the Portland Trail Blazers on Dec. 7. Tip off will start at 10:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on NBATV.
