Fire erupts at the Cedar Village Apartments Saturday night.

It was around 2:00 am in East Lansing, Mich. and the Michigan State Football team had just defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 34-24 to win the Big Ten Championship and clinch a berth to the Rose Bowl.

An MSU student had just carried his couch out to the corner of Elizabeth St. and Charles St. and lit it on fire while a nearby SUV blared Rich Homie Quan’s “Type of Way” from its speakers.

“What are you guys going to sit on now?” a fireman asked when he arrived at the scene to put the fire out.

“I guess we’re just going to stand,” the student said, who was likely several cups into his night.

“It’s a study break,” another student said, making reference to the upcoming finals week, while another student 20 feet away ran across the street, only to be tackled by police, handcuffed and taken away in a police car.

This was the scene at several locations in East Lansing following the MSU football victory Saturday night, where thousands of students took to the streets and lit their respective couches (among other things) on fire.

A large part of the riot took place at the Cedar Village Apartments, located just northeast of campus, where everything from trees, street signs and basketball hoops were uprooted from the ground and thrown onto a blaze that reached heights at up to 25 feet in the air.

Around 1:15 am, police arrived at the scene outfitted in riot gear, closing the area off so as not to allow any more students to get in. The thousands of students in the area eventually dispersed, while others were handcuffed and taken away into custody.

The area was mostly cleared by about 3:00 am.

So very saddened by all of this… I wish we could handle success better.

  • Chip up the road

Too bad MSU students can’t break the cycle of mayhem and vandalism when they have any success…it really diminishes the university, State, and achievements of those who are being celebrated in such a destructive, immature way.

Despite what these guys said, this was awesome!! Glad to be a part of it!

Blantant display of the low level of intellect of MSU students
