Alex Murphy transferring from Duke

Alex Murphy is leaving the Duke Blue Devils after getting minimal minutes the past two seasons.  This isn’t much of a surprise for Blue Devil fans because of the playing time Murphy was getting.  He found himself behind Rodney Hood this season, and knew that with the incoming freshmen class, he probably wouldn’t get much next season.

Hood has been able to step up for the Blue Devils this season, and has become one of the best players on the team.  This didn’t leave many minutes for Murphy, so it’s no surprise that he will be leaving.  He is a good player, and if he can find the right situation will make an impact on most teams next season.

The other reason this was an easy decision for Murphy is the recruiting class coming to Durham next fall.  The Blue Devils will be getting Justise Winslow, and Murphy would be competing with him for minutes, and Hood could also still be there.  They will also be getting Grayson Allen next season.  He could have taken minutes away from Murphy as well.Alex Murphy

There are a number of people who will still be there from this season’s team that would have competed with Murphy for playing time.  Not only the incoming freshmen, but Murphy would have had Matt Jones, Semi Ojeleye, Rasheed Sulaimon, and possibly Hood.  These are all players that Murphy could have watched take minutes away from him.  If he wants to play, it is a smart decision for Murphy to go to another school to do so.

Murphy is one of the players who could compete at another college.  He is a good player with potential, and if he gets game playing time could develop into a solid player over another two seasons.  A player like Murphy will get playing time at most other colleges, but if he can pick the right one he could become a starter.  This could be a great thing for him and the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils will get an extra scholarship because of this, and going forward this could benefit them in the next couple of years.  They could be looking to the 2015 recruiting class.  They don’t have one commit for that recruiting class yet, and this will give them another scholarship for that class.  They will only have one other one at the early signing period next season.  They will only have one senior on next season’s team and that’s Quinn Cook.  They will know that they have two scholarships now, but they will have at least one player leaving early from next season’s team and that number could grow over time.

The Blue Devils will not miss Murphy much next season.  There wouldn’t be enough minutes to help him improve again.  This is a smart move for Murphy and the Blue Devils.  He is a good player, and should contribute.  He should get more minutes, and be able to show everyone how good he really is.
