Florida Gators football: Hargreaves named an All-American

Florida GatorsHis team may have had a disappointing season on the field, but the individual honors just keep coming in for freshman cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III.

Hargreaves was named third-team All-America by the Associated Press on Tuesday. It is just the latest honor for the freshman cornerback, who was already named first-team All-Southeastern Conference and to the freshman All-American team.

One of the top recruits in the nation in 2013, Hargreaves made an immediate impact during his freshman campaign. With junior cornerbacks Marcus Roberson and Loucheiz Purifoy in and out of the lineup due to injuries and suspensions, Hargreaves emerged as Florida’s best corner.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Hargreaves finished his freshman season with 38 tackles, three interceptions and 11 pass breakups, while starting the final 10 games.

Hargreaves was so good in 2013 that he is already thought to be better than both Purifoy and Roberson, who both project as potentially high draft picks in this April’s NFL Draft. A lot of great cornerbacks have passed through the University of Florida over the years, from Joe Haden to Lito Sheppard to Keiwan Ratliff, but if Hargreaves can continue to play at such a high-level he could go down as the greatest in program history.

Hargreaves was one of the few bright spots for the Gators in 2013, and the postseason honors are just validation that he will be a building block for the future, on a team that is desperate for some.
