North Carolina Basketball: Hairston is done at UNC

It took a third of the season, but Hairston’s fate is finally known

On Wednesday afternoon North Carolina received words from the NCAA that senior guard Leslie McDonald would be eligible for its game against Texas. For all Tar Heels fans this was good news and gave hope that P.J. Hairston’s saga would also be coming to an end. It did, today, unfortunately not with the same positive result for UNC.

“Unfortunately P.J. made a number of mistakes that placed his eligibility at risk and the University’s joint review with the NCAA made it clear that seeking reinstatement for P.J. would not be possible,” says director of athletics Bubba Cunningham. “The University thanks him for his contributions to Carolina Basketball.”

Head coach Roy Williams was not happy of the outcome…

The man at the helm of the program also said this about the situation of his former shooting guard…

Those conversations will probably be about what the young man needs to do to set himself up for the next chapter of his basketball career… playing in the NBA. North Carolina could have used him this year, but let’s not forget that many thought Hairston would be jumping to the Association at the end of last season. The young man has the skills to play at the next level, now he needs to show everyone that he can also learn from mistakes made off the court.

It is definitely not the ending anyone that any Carolina fan wanted, but at least it puts closure to the story and now the team can move on from here on out knowing who is on the roster and who is not. Will this put a damper on the hopes of the team mates and make the team have another let down? We will see tomorrow when North Carolina hosts Davidson at the Dean Dome.
