December has been an overall exciting month for the Columbus Blue Jackets (16-17-4) who now rest in 6th place in the Metropolitan Division. After last night’s win against the Carolina Hurricanes (14-15-8) the team has a three-day rest to enjoy the holiday before they face off against the New Jersey Devils (15-16-7).
So how did the month of December play out? The Blue Jackets won six out of their eleven games, many being must-wins. Furthermore, their four losses all were close and were not due to a bad showing from the Jackets. The Blue Jackets pulled off a much-needed successful month and hopefully they can continue to win for the remainder of the month and carry on into January.
After they face the Devils on Friday, they will finish off the month playing against the Pittsburgh Penguins (27-11-1) on Sunday and the Colorado Avalanche (23-10-3) the following Tuesday. What will the team need to do to pull off those wins?
First, Ryan Johansen needs to play at the top of his game. Johansen has been successful scoring recently and will need to utilize his strength when they play against two of the league’s strongest scorers. Along the same line, the goalies need to be ready for anything.
Both the Penguins and the Avalanche have a player on the list of All-Stars for the week of December 16th – 23rd. Sidney Crosby of the Penguins and Matt Duchene of the Avalanche have been playing outstanding hockey recently and are both expected to continue to be key players for the teams. The goalies need to make sure to be prepared to play aggressive and be ready for both teams to attempt to score whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Both the Penguins and the Avalanche will have to face tough opponents before they play against the Blue Jackets; this can only work in the teams favor. Success for the end of the month will depend on both the Blue Jackets playing at the top of their ability and the teams they are set to face struggling for their next couple of games.
These three days of rest will be to the advantage of the Columbus Blue Jackets; lets hope they utilize the rest and continue to have a very successful December.
