Not only did the game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers come down to the final seconds of the game, but the Steelers’ season comes down to the final week of regular season play.
The Steelers were able to escape Lambeau Field with a 38-31 victory over the Packers. Ben Roethlisberger went 16 of 28 for 167 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Roethlisberger also scrambled for a 13-yard touchdown. Roethlisberger’s main target was Antonio Brown, who caught six passes for 105 yards.
One highlight for the Steelers’ running attack was that for the first time in 22 games, a Steelers’ back had over 100 yards on the day. Rookie back Le’Veon Bell rushed for 124 yards and one touchdown against the Packers.
The Steelers and Packers went back and fourth for most of the contest and after a controversial call on a Steelers’ field goal block, the Packers scored a go-ahead touchdown. However it was the Steel Curtain that came up with some big-time plays that helped lift the Steelers over the Packers.
Cortez Allen came up with a pick-six against Matt Flynn, a bit of poetic justice to the blown call on the field goal block. Though that play put the Steelers up late in the game, it was a crucial fumble by Flynn forced by Troy Polamalu and recovered by Brett Keisel that led to the Steelers going up 38-31 late in the fourth quarter.
The Packers still managed to keep the Steelers on their toes. A good kick return and a couple plays later, Flynn and company were threatening inside the ten yard line. After a false start by the Packers’ offensive line that led to a ten-second runoff, Flynn was unable to connect with a pass to the end zone and the Steelers went on to win.
With this win over the Packers, the Steelers were able to keep their hopes alive to sneak into the playoffs.
After all that’s gone wrong for the Steelers this season it’s hard to believe that int he very final week of the regular season the Steelers could still potentially find themselves in the playoffs.
The Steelers will need to beat the Cleveland Browns next week and the Baltimore Ravens, San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins all have to lose. Still a long shot, but nonetheless there’s still a shot at the postseason for the black and gold.
