Detroit Lions head coach search: Ken Whisenhunt is the favorite

The Detroit Lions’ top candidate for their head coach is reported to be San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. A source recently informed ESPN that the “job is his to lose”.

Whisenhunt has been considered the favorite for the job ever since Jim Schwartz was fired because of his successes in the past and his close connections with Lions’ ownership.

Whisenhunt began his NFL coaching experience as an assistant for the Ravens, Browns, Jets and Steelers. He eventually was hired by the Cardinals in 2007 to become their head coach.

Whisenhunt helped improve a struggling Arizona franchise to become relevant again while working with quarterback Kurt Warner effectively. In his second and third seasons with the Cardinals, they won the NFC West and reached the Super Bowl in 2008, where they would lose to the Steelers.

2012 would be Whisenhunt’s final season with the Cardinals, as he finished with a 45-51 record in six seasons with them. After three years of not making the playoffs, he was fired.

In January of 2013, the Chargers signed Whisenhunt to be their offensive coordinator.

Why he’s the best choice

Whisenhunt is exactly what the Lions need right now. He’s a guy that has NFL coaching experience and has helped turn around a franchise, which the Lions need desperately. He has also worked well with quarterbacks throughout his coaching experience, including Warner, Ben Roethlisberger and Phillip Rivers.

He could be instrumental in helping Matthew Stafford overcome some of his issues, which included struggling down the stretch of this past season. Whisenhunt’s offensive mind could also allow the Lions to get the most out of their talented offensive team.

Whisenhunt also has a good relationship with Lions’ General Manager Martin Mayhew, which dates back to their playing days with the Redskins.

The Lions have the offensive pieces in place to be successful in 2014 but need a new coach and some help defensively. The first thing I would do would be to hire Whisenhunt.
