The New Orleans Pelicans are currently 3 spots out of the Western Conference playoffs. Their record on the season is 15-17 and they are 4 games back of Dallas for that 8th spot.
As a New Year starts, every team wants to have a positive outlook on the rest of the season. Although, when Ryan Anderson went down with a herniated disk, (multiple reports say he will be out indefinitely), it’s hard to stay positive for this team at the moment. Anderson was the leading scorer for this Pelican offense, before suffering this injury on January 3rd against the Celtics. He was averaging 19.8 PPG, he was playing the most minutes out of anyone on the team, and he was bringing down 6.5 RPG. Anderson was their leader out on the court and now who is going to fill that role?
A crazy, but suitable idea: get Carmelo Anthony. The Knicks are in an awful position at the moment. With a record of 11-22 they don’t have the best chance of making it to the playoffs and even if they do they aren’t going to make a big splash. We all know that the New York Knicks have been a bust this season and if you follow the NBA at all you know that Melo is going to test the free agency market this summer. The Pelicans just lost their top scorer and Melo wants out of New York. Are you putting two and two together? The Knicks don’t want to let Melo just walk away without getting anything in return, so below is a trade that could benefit both teams.
New York Knicks get: SG Eric Gordon
SF Al-Farouq Aminu
PG Brian Roberts
New Orleans Pelicans get: SF Carmelo Anthony
I like this trade for a couple of reasons. Carmelo Anthony isn’t going to be playing in the postseason with the New York Knicks this season, but if he comes to New Orleans there is a good chance he could be. Melo doesn’t want to see this year be a bust for his career. If the Pelicans make this trade happen, there is a good chance we could see Melo start picking up his game. The Pelicans lost their top scorer for a while at least and Melo would fill that role.
The word on the street is that the Knicks want to get something in return for Melo. Not many teams want to have a guy on their roster that has already declared for free agency in the 2014 summer. That’s why if the Pelicans make this move they are bound to land Melo, because the Knicks are scared that they won’t get anymore offers from any other teams.
If you look at what the Pelicans would be giving up, you might cringe a little bit. The Pelicans matched the offer sheet for Gordon in the summer of 2012, but the Pelicans need to get to the playoffs this year. Melo wants out of New York (supposedly) and the Pelicans need to make a trade before the trade deadline (February 20th).
This trade doesn’t seem that crazy and the Pelicans need to stir the pot a little bit. They aren’t going to go very far in the playoffs with the roster they have now, but if you get Melo, who knows what could happen? Melo wants to be in the playoffs at the end of every year and if the Pelicans help him get there we could see a different player in Melo.
Tonight the Pelicans head down south to take on the Miami Heat. This game will be the last game of their four game road trip. The Pelicans need to put two good halves of basketball together to get this win and it’ll be interesting to see who steps up in Anderson’s place. Don’t shut the door on this Melo trade yet. The Pelicans need a top scorer fast if they want to sneak into the playoffs.
