Detroit Lions planning to interview Ken Whisenhunt Thursday

The early favorite to replace Jim Schwartz is set to interview for the Detroit Lions head coach position on Thursday. Ken Whisenhunt provides the Lions with everything they are looking for in a head coach.

While the team can interview Whisenhunt, no sort of hiring can be made until his San Diego Chargers are out of the playoffs. This could likely come as early as Sunday, as the Chargers face off against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

Whisenhunt gives the Lions a guy with head coaching experience as well as someone who is offensive-minded. Whisenhunt has also shown the ability to work effectively with the quarterbacks on his teams.

Other known candidates such as Jim Caldwell, Gary Kubiak and Mike Munchak are also offensive-minded former head coaches who have talked with the Lions in the past few days.

What those guys don’t have is the close connections that Whisenhunt has with the Lions GM Martin Mayhew. This, and his other attributes make Whisenhunt the Lions’ most-wanted candidate to be their new head coach.
