Indianapolis Colts: the way too early off-season primer

Well, the Indianapolis Colts are officially out of the playoffs. Accept it, move on and look forward to next season.

Which should be an excellent one.

Donald Thomas, Vick Ballard, Reggie Wayne and Dwayne Allen are all returning next season.

Between them and the improved Griff Whalen, LaVon Brazill, Da’Rick Rogers, Coby Fleener and T.Y. Hilton, this offense should flourish during the 2014-15 season.

As long as the Colts target interior linemen in free agency.

It’s time for them to protect quarterback Andrew Luck and that won’t happen with 2nd or 3rd rounders in the interior, as we’ve seen this season.

Proven players need to be brought in and plugged into the offense immediately.

A name I would like to see in a Colts’ uniform is center Alex Mack. A pro-bowler on a bad team; I’m sure he would love to find his way to a contender such as Indianapolis.

Otherwise the offense doesn’t need any immediate upgrades. Donald Brown should be re-signed at a reasonable price and a productive receiver would be a luxury.

The main focus should be the defensive front 7.

I’m sure plenty of you are upset with the play of the secondary this year, but a lot of that has to do with the fact there was a non-existent pass rush outside of Robert Mathis.

Honestly, I haven’t done enough research yet to name some names but positions targeted need to be defensive end, inside linebacker and a veteran outside linebacker.

Antoine Bethea should be back if he's willing to take a hometown discount. Especially considering his play has dropped off considerably the past few seasons. (Photo credit: Andy Lyons/Getty Images )

I would also like to see safety Jairus Byrd replace Antoine Bethea in the defensive backfield.

Besides that, I would like to see defensive coordinator Greg Manusky let go, with Wade Phillips being a potential replacement.

And also a few of Grigson’s failed signings being let go: namely, Greg Toler.

He shows promise but he’s been extremely injury prone his whole career and is definitely not worth the money he is making. Time to save some salary cap space and cut him and sign or draft another cornerback, unless he’s willing to take a pay cut, which won’t happen.

Some names in free agency at that position include Aqib Talib and Brent Grimes.

Furthermore, Samson Satele HAS to be cut. He absolutely can’t be on the roster next season, especially considering how much money he will be making.

Adam Vinatieri must be brought back, Pat McAfee should be re-signed, Vontae Davis is another mandatory re-signing, Antoine Bethea could be brought back at the right price, only if there isn’t a better replacement for him in free agency or the draft.

Kavell Conner, Josh Gordy, Fili Moala and potentially Aubrayo Franklin should be brought back for depth purposes on low level contracts.

The future looks very bright for this young team and I have very high hopes for them in 2014. Go Colts!

I love the colts too, but they need a new defensive and offensive coordinator. I don’t think much of Hamliton. His play calling indicates he needs to go back to college racks as well as the defensive coordinator. They both are over their heads.

I’m willing to give Pep Hamilton more time as he’s shown promise, even though it’s been coupled with some head scratching stretches of play calling.

I also don’t want to see Luck have to go through 3 coordinators in 3 years, recipe for disaster.

Manusky was always a terrible pick up and with people like Wade Phillips and Ray Horton of the Browns available the Colts should look to improve on that side of the ball by picking up a proven coordinator.

      But I doubt that happens
