Michigan Football recruiting update: rounding out 2014

Michigan Football has a strong 2014 recruiting class, currently ranked #12 by ESPN. It is a relatively small class with just 16 commits but there is little room for additional commits. With that being said, U-M could feasibly add as many as 3 more players to this class. Newly anointed offensive coordinator, Doug Nussmeier, should bolster Michigan’s stock with recruits and could help them land a key commit in these final few weeks before National Signing Day.

Running Back

The coaching staff would like to add a running back to this class and they appear to have their sights set on Jeff Jones (Minneapolis, Minnesota). Jones, who checks in at 6-foot, 196, shined at the Under Armour All-American game and is currently committed to Minnesota. However, Jones is still looking around and has official visits scheduled to Florida and Michigan, with the Wolverines receiving his final visit on Jan. 31.

Jones rushed for 1,525 yards and 34 touchdowns as a senior and was named the MVP for Team Nitro in the Under Armour All-American game. He totaled 72 yards of offense and scored a touchdown in the game. He is the #9 ranked running back in the country according to rivals.com.

Malik McDowell (isportsweb)

Malik McDowell is a 6-foot-6, 260-pound defensive end out of Southfield, Michigan. He played his senior season alongside Michigan commit Lawrence Marshall at Southfield High School. He is a 4 star recruit and one of the top defensive ends in the country. He was a US Army All-American.

McDowell has been very deliberate and thorough throughout the recruiting process. He has long been a priority for Michigan. McDowell is planning to take official visits to Florida State, LSU and Ohio State in January. He has visited Michigan and Michigan State numerous times.

Odds and ends

Michigan may look to add another QB prior to signing day.

National Signing Day is Feb. 5.

Michigan recently offered class of 2015 5 star defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick (Jersey City, New Jersey) a scholarship. They also offered 4-star defensive end Jalen Dalton (Clemmons, North  Carolina)
