Michigan Football recently hired a new offensive coordinator, Doug Nussmeier, and his presence in Ann Arbor has garnered the attention of recruits across the country. His biggest impact will obviously be on the 2015 recruiting class and beyond. However, he is in a position to help Michigan finish what is already a strong recruiting class with a bang.

Running back Jeff Jones (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is fresh off an MVP performance for team Nitro in the Under Armour All American game. He is currently committed to Minnesota, but has trips lined up to Florida, the weekend of Jan. 24, and Michigan, the weekend of Jan. 31. National signing day is Feb. 5.

Jones racked up 2,018 total yards of offense and 42 touchdowns as a senior at Washburn High School and was named Minnesota’s Mr. Football. At 6-foot, 196 pounds, he is a powerful runner with good speed. Here’s an excerpt of his scouting report from ESPN;

This is a big-framed running back with a good combination of size and straight-line speed…Shows the ability to read linebacker flow quickly and cutback through the hole with good anticipation when he breaks into the second level…With Jones’ current measurables and athleticism he has big upside to flourish as a power runner.

Jones has sky-rocketed up the recruiting rankings. He jumped 38 spots in 247 Sports’ final rankings and is now the #9 overall running back in the country according to rivals.com.

He has stated his top three schools are Minnesota, Florida and Michigan. I list the Gophers first because he is actually verbally committed to play there, but it’s unclear if he will change his mind with the other offers on the table.

Brady Hoke and his staff currently have 16 players committed for their 2014 recruiting class, but they do not have a running back in the fold. Given the struggles of the running game and the lack of a clear cut starter on the 2014 roster, Jones would be a great addition to the class.

    This one didn’t work out for big blue

    If Nussmeier wants to endear himself immediately to Wolverine fans then bringing in some top skill-position talent would be a great place to start. Sorely needed.

      Agreed, they need skill position players, but they have to get the offensive line rolling too. Lots of work to be done.
