Big news surrounding the New Orleans Pelicans association this afternoon, as the team lands a new point guard. The Brooklyn Nets will send guard Tyshawn Taylor and cash to the Pelicans for a future draft pick. League sources have said that the Brooklyn Nets will also send forward Tornike Shengelia to the Chicago Bulls for guard Marquis Teague.
The draft pick that the Pelicans are sending to the Nets is a second-round pick. Tyshawn Taylor is averaging 3.9 PPG, 0.7 RPG and 1.6 APG. Taylor didn’t play that often for the Nets, but played some minutes for the teams D-League squad.
Taylor has appeared in 23 games this season for the Nets and averaged about 12 minutes per contest. The Portland Trail Blazers drafted Taylor in the second round last year and then he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets for cash. Taylor’s career-high in points is 12 and career-high in minutes are 34.
The Pelicans need help at the guard position with Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans out with injuries. Word on the street is that another Pelican was injured in their last game. Center Jason Smith is supposedly out indefinitely with cartilage damage in his right knee. The Pelicans can’t seem to buy a break, but hopefully with the addition of Tyshawn Taylor the Pelicans can get back on the winning track.
The last time the New Orleans Pelicans won a basketball game was when they played the Boston Celtics on January 3rd of this year. The Pelicans had a healthy lineup going into that game. Everyone was looking to contribute to the team and Anthony Davis finished as the leading scorer for the Pelicans with 23 points. This is the game when Ryan Anderson went out with a shoulder injury. Times have changed since that win for the Pelicans and four key Pelican players are out with injuries.
What is causing this Pelican team to stay on the wrong side of the tracks? Is it the fact that Eric Gordon is on the trading block? I wouldn’t say that is hurting them so much anymore. During this 7-game skid Gordon is averaging just about 22 points per game. In the last game for the Pelicans Gordon finished with an impressive 35-point outing.
Is this team not winning because of the schedule they have? They have played a tough schedule to start this New Year off. The seven teams that the Pelicans have lost to during this losing streak, would all make the playoffs if they ended today. Pelicans schedule doesn’t get any easier in the future, because tonight they take on the red-hot Golden State Warriors.
Than what has caused this Pelican team to only capture one win in their last nine games? The answer to that key question is injuries. The Pelicans are struggling to keep everyone healthy and that isn’t good, because it’s a long season. They are now 7 games out of the playoffs and are currently in last place in the Southwest Division.
The Pelicans need some help to say the least. They have made one move already in acquiring a new point guard. Now they have to make a few more moves to get this team into the playoff race. The Pelicans are right in the middle of the pack when it comes to points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game.
One of the reasons the Pelicans can’t win a game is because they are ranked 27th in the league in points allowed with 103.1. If the Pelicans can keep their opponents under 100 points they might find themselves winning more games. Hopefully Taylor can make an immediate impact on the team and help this team get on a winning streak.
