New Orleans Pelicans: Beginning of the week report

Last week the New Orleans Pelicans lost all three of their games, the week before that they lost all four of their games and the week before that they lost two out of the three games they had. That’s correct, the Pelicans have only won one game in the year 2014.

Last Monday the Pelicans lost to the San Antonio Spurs by 6 points at home, 101-95. The Spurs are a great team, but the Pelicans just didn’t have enough juice to put them away in the fourth quarter. This has been a concern recently for this Pelican team. They play good basketball even with all their injured stars sitting on the bench. They just don’t have enough depth to finish off games late in the fourth quarter.

This is the time of the year where you start looking for that depth on the trading block. Pelicans have already made one deal, so why not make another deal and ship Tyreke Evans and Eric Gordon out of town? They are taking up a lot of cap space on your team and thats’s a lot of money to be giving away while this team is on an 8-game losing streak.

Last Wednesday they took on the Houston Rockets in New Orleans and lost a very close game by 3 points, 103-100. Eric Gordon had a fabulous night with 35 points, but again the Pelicans couldn’t finish the Rockets off late in the fourth quarter. Gordon may be the best player to have the ball in his hands in the last seconds of the game, but he isn’t hitting the big shots in big moments. The Pelicans might need to re-consider whose hand the ball is in late in the fourth quarter.

On Saturday the Pelicans played their third home game in a row and Anthony Davis had an outstanding game. He finished with 31 points, 17 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block. The Pelicans had a very strong start to the game and had an early 5-point lead after the first quarter. Unfortunately, the Pelicans didn’t get the win against the Golden State Warriors and lost 97-87.

The best part about a new week is that it gives this Pelican team a fresh start. This team needs to go into this new week with a different mindset and win at least two out of their four games. After a rough couple of weeks with a tough schedule the Pelicans next four games are against teams with an average winning percent of .391.

Today the Pelicans take on the Memphis Grizzlies in Memphis. The Pelicans are 5 games back of the Grizzlies in the playoff race. If New Orleans could get this win today that would be a huge momentum boost and that win would get the Pelicans off this 8-game losing streak. On Tuesday the Pelicans take on Sacramento Kings, then on Friday they go to Detroit to play the Pistons and to round out the week they take on the Orlando Magic on Sunday in New Orleans.

The Pelicans currently have a record of 15-24 and are 9 games out of 8th place in the Western Conference. They are 1-9 in their last 10 games. The Pelicans need to start getting some wins that is the bottom line. I know I can write about how they need to win games and I know the Pelicans can think about winning games, but they have to go out on that court and actually win games. If the Pelicans can capture two wins this week it may just be enough to turn this team around.
