As the VCU basketball team heads to Ohio, they prepare for Dayton’s dynamic team which will make for a tough game on the road. As basketball fans compare the Dayton Flyers and the VCU Rams, they will see many similarities and many critical differences.
One of the biggest parallels the two teams have is their versatile players. Both teams have players who can come off the bench with the skill to succeed and the starting players are seasoned, well-rounded players.
Point guard against point guard, Briante Weber and Khari Price match up pretty well with speed and talent. Both are great scoring ball handlers. One of Weber’s most thrilling skills is his ability to steal the ball under any circumstance. Price thrives in this same area as a successful defensive speed demon with quick hands. In addition, the Rams count on their ability to force turnovers to win many games. With this in mind, Price only gave up 20 turnovers in the 2012-2013 season. VCU’s offense has been lacking lately. They need to keep their game tight against the talented defense Price and the rest of his team are bringing. Dayton will be ready for VCU’s havoc style, so the Rams will need to count on both offense and defense to win this one.
Next, Jordan Sibert will create challenges for VCU as he is the highest scoring player for Dayton with 12.4 PPG. Sibert is a talented 3-point shooter which tends to hurt VCU more than one would like because of their lack of offense lately. Sibert shoots over 45% with both field goals and 3-point shots. The Rams will need to keep their eye on Sibert, especially when he’s setting up from outside.
One characteristic of the Flyers that VCU can take advantage of is their struggle in the front court. In addition, VCU is an “all or nothing” team who never gives up. Dayton appeared to lose some fire against Richmond in their last game when they got down to the critical last moments. If the Rams can improve on offense and get ahead, even late in the game, they can use their relentless speed to keep ahead against the Flyers.
VCU battles Dayton at 7:00 tonight. The game will be broadcasted on CBS Sports Network.
