Is Juan Mata the Missing Piece at Manchester United?

If the rumors are true, Manchester United are close to signing one of the world’s best playmakers in attempt to salvage something from their season in Juan Mata.  Sources say that the transfer fee is supposedly set at £37 million   and is already undergoing a medical at the club.  The Chelsea playmaker is desperate to get more playing time ahead of the World Cup in Brazil by completing a move to Manchester United.  With the impending transfer, one has to ask, is this the right transfer to help save Manchester United’s damaged campaign? Juan Mata

Juan Mata began his career in the Real Madrid youth academy where he joined at the age of 15 and would swiftly move up the ranks in the academy.  He would then switch over to Real Madrid’s Castilla in 2006 where he finished as the club’s second highest goal scorer even though the club were relegated that season.  He would later move to Valencia who agreed to pay off his release clause in 2007.  He would later be voted the team’s Best Young Player in his first season at the club by the fans and players alike.  Throughout his four year spell at the club, Juan Mata would amass 46 goals and 37 assists in 186 appearances.   It was his last season at the club that attracted the most interest from several Premier League clubs where Mata would register 17 goals in 68 appearances.

In 2011, Chelsea were going through a rebuilding stage in an effort to recreate a fresh and young Chelsea squad in which the club were still marshaled by superstars Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba whom were almost in their mid thirties at this time.  Juan Mata would complete his £23.5 million move from Valencia and he would be one of Villas Boas’s summer signings since taking the helm that summer.  The former Chelsea boss would also sign Romelu Lukaku, Oriol Romeu, Raul Meireles, and Thibaut Courtois that summer as well.

In his first season at Chelsea, Juan Mata would go on to score 16 goals and assist another 22 in 60 appearances for the club and was rewarded with the club’s Player of the Year award for his remarkable consistency throughout his first campaign at the club.  Later in the season, he would help Chelsea go on a historic run in the Champions League where they managed to reach the finals to play against heavily favorites, Bayern Munich.  In the final, Mata would assist Didier Drogba’s dramatic header to equalize  and take both sides to extra time then penalties.  In the penalty shootout, Mata would be the first to shoot but it would be saved by Bayern Munich goal keeper, Manuel Neuer.  However, Cheslea would go onto their first ever Champions League cup in dramatic fashion by winning the penalty shootout 4-3.  In his first season at the club, Chelsea won two major competitions that year and had notched 2nd in the assists column in the Premier League with 13 assists.

Juan Mata Controlling the Ball

Juan Mata will be linking up with Wayne Rooney and Robin vanPersie which is already being seen as the most exciting attacking partnership in Premier League.  This could be seen as the defining moment in Manchester United’s campaign as he could change their present course to falling out of the top four.  With all of his accomplishments, Juan Mata can surely bring his world class talent to any team including the faltering Manchester United whom currently lie in 7th place with 37 points.  With this impending transfer, he will have a chance to once again prove himself to the world that he deserves to be in the starting lineup for Spain’s World Cup squad this summer in Brazil.

If he manages to aid Manchester United to reach a top four spot then he will undoubtedly deserve the spot to play in one of the best international squads in the world.  This will be the perfect opportunity for Mata to prove himself at the biggest stage and to play for one of the most historic and biggest clubs in all of football.  Should he succeed then he will be deemed a hero to all of the United faithful.  With the transfer to be completed soon, will it prove to be a successful one and could it possibly save Manchester United’s season?  Only time will tell whether or not if Manchester United managed to sign an excellent player who can turn around their fortunes.
