New Orleans Pelicans: End of the week report

The New Orleans Pelicans have the opportunity to win back-to-back games this week. The Pelicans have had a fabulous week so far. They have 2 wins and 1 lose on the week. Let’s see if they can continue the strong play and get a win tonight.

The New Orleans Pelicans take on the Orlando Magic in New Orleans tonight at 6 PM464880925_10-h600 ET. The Magic are hanging out near the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 12-32 record. The Pelicans are unfortunately not in that better of shape than the Magic.

This week the Pelicans have showed the fans that their brighter days are in the future… hopefully very soon in the future.

Pelicans took care of business on Monday by beating the Grizzlies 95-92. Not only did the Pelicans get their second win in the year 2014, they also snapped their 8-game losing streak. In my book Anthony Davis was the backpack player of this game. He carried the workload for this Pelicans team scoring 27 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, 2 assists, an impressive 4 steals and of course 4 blocks.

The main key to the Pelicans winning that game was that they didn’t trip up in the third quarter. The Pelicans usually come out of halftime looking sluggish, because they can never put together good numbers in the third quarter. This was not the case against Memphis. The Pelicans played great basketball from start to finish.

The Sacramento Kings came to New Orleans to take on the Pelicans that very next day.  And Rudy Gay from the Kings went off and he torched the Pelicans defense. Gay finished the game with career high 41 points and the Kings won 114-97. It would be nice if the Pelicans had a player who could score 40 points in a game once in a while.

The Pelicans tried to make a run in the second quarter, but other than that this game was all Sacramento. The Pelicans were outscored 27-14 in the third quarter. This has become a big problem for the Pelicans all season long. New Orleans is one of the worst teams in the NBA in third quarter scoring.

To stop this third quarter slump, the Pelicans need to come out of halftime with the mindset that they need to get to the free throw line to win games. If someone drives to the rim three options may occur. Fouled, double-teamed, kick out to a three-point shooter or the player driving to the rim is going to score.

If the Pelicans guards get in the middle of the paint it will free up Austin Rivers on the three-point line. Driving in the paint will also create dump-offs to the big men down low. There wouldn’t be anything more smoother about a no look pass from Gordon to Davis.

On Friday the Pelicans had another horrendous third quarter against the Pistons, Pelicans were outscored 32-17. The Pelicans made a great comeback and Eric Gordon was the purse of the game. He came in clutch scoring a layup with 1.9 seconds left to help the Pelicans claim the comeback win. Gordon finished with 15 points and 7 turnovers.

The Pelicans are 2-1 this week and have a very solid chance to win another game today. Orlando is a little sloppy with the basketball averaging almost 15 turnovers a game. If the Pelicans can get the Magic to commit some turnovers they should have no problem with winning this game.

If the Pelicans get the win against the Magic it’ll be the first time all season that the Pelicans have won three games in one week.
