The leaders before the weekend, Arsenal dropped three points after they were the victims of a first half thrashing to an explosive Liverpool squad. After the first 20 minutes, Liverpool were 4-0 up. Goals from Sturridge, Sterling, and Skrtel put the dagger in Arsenal’s heart before they even had a chance on goal. It was absolute domination, as Arsenal were on the back foot from the first whistle.
It all started with a free kick from Steven Gerrard which deflected into the goal of the knee of Skrtel. The early goal stunned Arsenal, but left Anfield ecstatic. Then, a few minutes later, another set piece from Gerrard found Skrtel, who thumped in a powerful header. At this point, it was evident that there was no hope for Arsenal as Liverpool were out to make a statement.
Fresh off their 4-0 win in the Merseyside Derby, Liverpool could easily repeat such a miraculous scoreline, but this time against the squad at the top of the table. The man who has lead the team to glory, Luis Suarez’s 23 goals could have been 24, but the woodwork proved strong as Suarez shot a venomous volley from 30 yards. These instances of brilliance from Suarez is what makes Liverpool so dangerous, and a minute later, Suarez found Sterling for a tap in to make it 3-0.
However, Liverpool were not done yet. Soon enough, Philippe Coutinho threaded a beautiful through ball which found Daniel Sturridge like a needle in a haystack. With Sturridge one on one with the keeper, there was only one place the ball was going, and that was in the back of the net. Another goal for Sturridge puts his tally at 15 goals this season, which is an incredible feat despite playing with Suarez, who has scored 23 goals this term. This 20 minute onslaught on Arsenal proved to be vital as Liverpool won 5-1.
Liverpool’s victory on Saturday shows how shocking this league can be. No one could have imagined Liverpool to win by an aggregate of four goals this weekend. This demolition of a noticeably strong Arsenal defense prior to this match demonstrates how it is anyone’s title to win. With Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool all lurking within six points of each other, it is hard to tell who will prove the strongest as we approach the end of the season.
As for Arsenal, they must put this result behind them and focus on their next match Manchester United. This fixture will be important for both squads as Manchester United were left struggling on Sunday against the bottom-dwelling Fulham. Another struggle at home for United leaves them weak against Arsenal on Wednesday, but whoever wins will most likely start a positive run.
