I have a lot of time to think these days, as the Indianapolis Colts‘ season is officially over, and I had an interesting thought. It was based off an idea of looking at players that had talent, but had trouble locking onto a team in 2013 for whatever reason. The first position I pondered about was the safety position and here is what I came up with:
A name that intrigued me was Kerry Rhodes. He was the only one available that didn’t have significant injury problems and still showed he can play at a high level.
He also fills the need the Colts have at coverage safety. His 2012 stats (last active season) with the Arizona Cardinals were as follows: 67 tackles, 1 sack, 2 forced fumbles, 11 passes defended and 4 interceptions. Those are pretty good stats for a guy who couldn’t find a job in 2013.
And the reason he couldn’t find a roster spot might have been due to reports that were surfacing about his sexual orientation (which he denied). At least, that’s according to a Pro Football Talk article. And I feel the Colts locker room is one that could handle this kind of ‘dilemma’ with class and ease.
And if that’s the only reason Rhodes wasn’t on a team in 2013, the Colts should definitely ponder at taking a stab at him. I’m not saying he’s surefire pro bowler, but at worst, he’s a solid backup and at best he provides a major boost for a weak secondary.
Rhodes could be an insurance policy/stopgap at the safety position; as in, the Colts could still pursue the likes of T.J. Ward and Jairus Byrd without having to worry about whether or not they’ll have a safety they can depend on heading into the new season, to go along with Delano Howell.
Rhodes will be 32 by the start of the 2014 season, so it would most likely have to be a 1 or 2 year deal at $1-$2 million per year. If it doesn’t work out, then cut him, simple as that.
It’s just an interesting move, that could have a major impact, which I conjured up out of nowhere (isn’t that how GMs do it anyways?) and wanted to hear what other Colts’ fans thought about it. I’d like to hear from you, about how you would feel, if the Colts actually pulled this off and/or if there are any other names out there in similar situations that interest you.
For example, I have heard Nick Collins’ name from a fellow Colts fan. Considering Collins is looking to make a comeback, it’s not a completely incomprehensible idea, but my problem is that Collins has some major injury concerns. Of course, if he can stay healthy, and that is a big IF, he could end up being the biggest steal of free agency.
Anyways, the Rhodes move wouldn’t hurt in my book, it would be a low risk, high reward signing. And we all know that GM Ryan Grigson could really use a golden off-season after the one he had last year. Here’s to hoping 2014 is a good one. Go Colts!
