Can Sergei Bobrovsky win the Vezina again this year?

While we are watching some of our boys represent their home countries in the Olympics this week, it is important to recognize the success of goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. Bobrovsky joined the team during the 2012-2013 season and was a key aspect to the teams success last year and continues to be an important player.

He is also the defending Vezina Trophy winner, but does he have what it takes this season to be a contender for this years trophy? That’s a tough call. Over the past five years there has only been one repeated winner, Tim Thomas. And, while Bobrovsky has been having a fairly successful season – especially an outstanding January – there are many other potential candidates.

Currently, Bobrovsky is up against some tough competition. The greatest coming from Tuukka Rask from the Boston Bruins (37-16-4), Josh Harding of the Minnesota Wild (32-21-7), and Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens (32-21-6). As of right now, I believe that this years Vezina’s winner will be one of those three. It may even be possible to cut down the list a little more. While Rask is having an amazing season, it is argued by some that his stats may appear greater than they actually should be due to the strength of the Bruins defense. Therefore, while Rask is a front runner for this years trophy, he may be surpassed by Harding or Price who have a greater personal presence.

Now, I’m not trying to say that our beloved Bobrovsky is out of this years race; but he needs to continue to play at a hight caliber. Furthermore, it is important that he does not sustain anymore injuries that will put him out for many games. When Bobrovsky is playing at the top of his game he is a great competitor and has what it takes to win the Vezina again. If he can stay healthy and continue to have some outstanding games, Sergei Bobrovsky has as much of a chance as winning the Vezina Trophy this year as any of the other contenders.
