Yet again, the New Orleans Saints organization has been busy trading, cutting and signing. There has been mixed feelings about all of these moves, but in this article I will try to convince fans that Mickey Loomis knows what he is doing, so they shall not fear.
Loomissomehow finds money within the restraints of the salary cap to afford star players. A perfect example of this is Jarius Byrd. The safety from Buffalo the Saints just brought on board. However, is this contract too much? His six-year $54 million contract is the highest paid for this position in the league. Some how Mickey Loomis found a way for the Saints to afford this all-star safety after losing Malcolm Jenkins. These are the type of moves that separate the good GMs from the also-rans.
It has been said that the Saints may have one of the best safety squads in the league or maybe second best to Seattle. But, this is the Saint’s main goal; to bring on guys who are young and have shown they can play in the NFL. They are trying to build an elite squad and make sure their back-ups are just as good.
Many fans were upset with the recent cuts, especially fan-favorite, Darren Sproles. His wife wasn’t so happy about the trade either and voiced her opinions via social media. But this is strictly business and we have seen how it has impacted the team in a positive way by allowing the signings of two very important players. The cuts were not all done to afford Jimmy Graham. They were done with the intent of bringing in high-caliber guys that may be worth a little more money, but are really what the Saints need.
Philadelphia is reaping the benefits of the Saints recent cuts. By acquiring Malcolm Jenkins and Darren Sproles, it will be interesting to see how these two perform on this new team. However, these guys won’t have to worry about facing their old team since the Saints do not play the Eagles in the 2014 season. We thought the Cowboys would acquire Will Herring but it was announced by his agent that he was not happy with this deal and did not agree with the team on a contract. This leaves him in search of a new deal.
From the Darren Sproles trade the Saints have acquired a 5th round draft pick. Hopefully, with this they can obtain a good offensive lineman. I think by now they should be stacked on defense. Something interesting about this team is that they have needs on both offense and defense. Now that the Saints seem to have taken care of the defense, one would think they would focus next on shoring up the offensive line. Somehow, I believe Mickey Loomis will get this done.
By re-signing Pierre Thomas, they have retained a leader of the running back squad. He provides experience and a great attitude for guys like Mark Ingram and Travaris Cadet. He is the oldest, at 29, of all the running backs and knows this team very well. The Saints believe he is worth keeping and hopefully he can prove this next season.
The icing on the cake will be the re-signing of Jimmy Graham. This is what Saints fans have been waiting for all offseason. Once this is accomplished it will make the team feel complete.
So, for all you Saints fans who may be disappointed with some of the activity that has gone on during this offseason, my advice to you is to not fear. Mickey Loomis definitely knows what he is doing. He has been with this team for 14 years. I think he finally has all the tools he needs to put together an excellent squad. The Saints have an opportunity to be scary good, once all of these puzzle pieces get put together.
