Dallas Stars: Playoffs need to become the rule, not the exception

The Dallas Stars have undergone a rebuilding process, after missing the postseason for five straight years. During this time they’ve acquired lots of young talent, while also retaining key veterans.

This season, the Stars entered the Olympic break in 8th place of the Western Conference. While this is a good sign, the Stars cannot simply continue to be “Sellers” at the trade deadline.

Seemingly the past few seasons they have not been in contention for the playoffs this deep into the season, so understandably they try to trade some of their assets in order to get new young players that will benefit them into the future.

The time has come for them to quit selling their future, and build a team around the star young players that they have. Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin and Kari Lehtonen are proving to be some of the brightest young players in the league. With these young players and most of them having big game experience (Be it the playoffs (Seguin), or Olympics (Benn & Lehtonen)).

It is my belief that with the core that the Stars currently possess that they should not trade their veterans to other playoff contending teams, but should instead look to add players that could help to ensure that the Stars will make it back to the postseason. One such player that I feel they should target is Dan Girardi, defenseman currently with the New York Rangers. What Girardi could bring is depth to what is the weakest part of the stars current roster. By adding Dan it would help to reduce the minutes that veterans like Trevor Daley will have to play.

Girardi has been consistently among the league leaders in minutes played, and being able to provide that depth would surely make for a better defensive unit. However, the price to acquire him might be high because the Rangers are also in playoff contention. With that being said I feel that a viable trade would be to send the Rangers Ray Whitney and a 3rd-round pick in exchange for Girardi. The Rangers would gain another winger who could provide them some leadership, while also not being a defensive liability.

The Stars need to take whatever action possible to ensure that they make the postseason this year, because building depth only is acceptable for so many years. Now is the time to build around the young core we have and to move forward with the young talent to become a stronger team overall. The Stars must be buyers and push for a higher seed so that they can return to hold Lord Stanley’s Trophy once more
