Mexico Soccer: Monstrous resurgence; Cruz Azul gets back to winning ways

Cruz Azul made a monstrous resurgence this week after experiencing two consecutive defeats last week in the Liga MX and CONCACAF Champions League.

After falling victim to its first defeat of the season it was important for La Maquina to get back to its winning ways. Cruz Azul did not hesitate to get back on track as a stellar performance from Cruz Azul midfielder Marco Fabian pushed to surpass a stubborn Tijuana side last Saturday. Two impressive strikes from Fabian secured the 2-1 victory in the Estadio Azul.

Fabians impressive performance against Tijuana offered a much needed boost of confidence for the midweek clash with Sporting Kansas City in the second leg of the Champions League.

After experiencing a short drout of goals it was significant that La Maquina get back on the scoresheet, especially with the magnitude of Fabians strikes last Saturday that seemed to make up for the deficiency of goals.

On Wednesday Cruz Azul was dealt the tough task of remounting a 1-0 scoreline against Sporting. But La Maquina dominated that affair in what escalated into a 5-1 thrashing of the MLS side in the Estadio Azul.

A hat-trick from Mariano Pavone and a goal a piece from Mauro Formica and Chaco Gimenez sealed Sportings fate. A strike from American Benny Feilhaber gave Kansas City a glimmer of hope that was easily routed  by La Maquinas dominace in the second half.

La Maquina looks eager to get back to its best and after a slight hiccup last week it would appear that Cruz Azul is hungry to silence its critics. The main goal at hand is the Liga MX but after aqcuiring a place in the semi-final why not go for the double.

Cruz Azul now has an even bigger incentive to continue its hot streak. Two titles in one season would be more than ideal for pacifying its critics after a long run without a league title.
